I'd just like to question the part of the article "Shortly after the start of World War Two" - if the film was released in 1942, then surely WW2 had been fought for nearly 3 years before then. Were there any prophets involved?

I believe that's the point of this scene: to show that someone (King Cutler) knew a wreck was planned and was going to profit by it.
