Would it be appropriate to add an example on the increasing powers granted to security agencies in democracies? The erosion of rights is a double ratchet: powers granted ratchet up within a nation, and the examples of other nations are used to ratchet up the powers granted within nations behind the curve.

I'd say, find a reliable source to cite. If you can, then go ahead and put it in. Right now several examples lack citations; I just removed one of these for being manifestly wrong (see below). Dausuul (talk) 16:38, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would Jevon's Paradox be an example?[edit]

Jevons paradox describes the idea of efficiency in energy leading to increase in the consumption due to a fall in price. I've never heard of the rachet effect, would it be applicable. Keith Joseph has priority over Robert Higgs[edit]

The use of the term to describe irreversible government expansion by Keith Joseph (Margaret Thatcher's policy adviser) in the 1970s predates the publication of Higgs's Crisis and Leviathan.
