Merge proposals[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to merge all. Fork99 (talk) 01:21, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian Transport#South East Queensland rail article overlap, I propose merging Queensland Rail Citytrain network and Rail network in South East Queensland into this article.

  • There is quite a lot of information overlap between the articles.
  • For consistency with all other state capitals in Australia. For example, Sydney has Sydney Trains and Railways in Sydney.
  • Citytrain is a formal brand name, and isn't in present use by Queensland Rail in customer-facing information. I refute using this name as a title as, for example: NSW TrainLink is legally called NSW Trains, but it is not used for passenger information, nor would everyday passengers be expected to know that name.
  • It’s almost akin to how Adelaide Metro and Transperth don’t have a formal commonly used brand name to distinguish their trains from other modes of transport.

I also propose moving this article to Railways in South East Queensland for consistency with the other state capitals' railways articles, but one step at a time for now. Fork99 (talk) 01:42, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Support both changes (merges and name change). I'm happy to help with editing and rewriting the new article once they've been merged, I will take a look through the other railway articles to try and get some consistency with subheadings. Gracchus250 (talk) 02:08, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support, SE Queensland is perfectly fine to use as a pseudo "capital" to include Gold Coast with Brisbane
I'd also like to see some more consistency between all states with all titles either using the first or the second example:
  • "Railways in STATE", "Railways in CAPITAL"
  • "Railway transport in STATE", "Railway transport in CAPITAL"
At the moment there is a strange mix of the two. eg Rail transport in Victoria while it's Railways in Melbourne. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 02:43, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support as per nominator and for consistency with other cities in Australia. Steelkamp (talk) 06:06, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support merge and name change, however I disagree with the claim that Citytrain isn't in present use by Queensland Rail in customer facing information. It's used extensively on their website. See one example here https://www.queenslandrail.com.au/forcustomers/access Hukak (talk) 12:33, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just an irrelevant side note: Me personally, I wouldn't go to the Queensland Rail website to plan a trip on the train. I'd either go to Translink's wesbite or Google Maps (usually Google Maps as it's easier). Nor do you ever see or hear the word 'Citytrain' when you actually go to a station and/or catch a train in Brisbane. Fork99 (talk) 13:31, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will close this in a few days, and start merging if no objections are made. Fork99 (talk) 15:34, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What the! I just found this sentence on Rail transport in Australia: "Queensland Rail through their City network division (formerly Citytrain) is the state government operator of the South East Queensland railway network, which is part of the Translink network." Is Citytrain a term no longer used? Steelkamp (talk) 11:34, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Steelkamp: Wow what a disgustingly long sentence! Apparently it’s inconsistently used. I’ve personally been on the train and been to many stations in South East Queensland, and have never seen or heard “Citytrain” anywhere, they just simply call themselves “Queensland Rail” (as of 2022). However, some company/government reports use “Queensland Rail Citytrain” and if you dig hard enough, on their website too.
Also preferably, I’d only support keeping the name as a title if it’s in wide usage by secondary sources, and if you do a Google search, there’s almost nothing. I get 2 pages of news articles through the news tab with “Citytrain” compared with “Queensland Rail” which gets significantly more search results. See WP:COMMONNAME: it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources). I argue that there is no common name. Queensland Rail could refer to its train services outside of South East Queensland, i.e. Queensland Rail Travel (which is a separate brand), so that’s not an option.
Because they can’t decide what to call themselves, I think we shouldn’t be using the name as an article’s title, similar to how Transperth and Adelaide Metro don’t have official/common names for their train systems.
Obviously keep it as a redirect. Fork99 (talk) 21:16, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rail transport in South East QueenslandRailways in South East Queensland – Consistency with other articles in other states, e.g. Railways in Sydney, Railways in Perth. Also see merge proposal above at Talk:Rail transport in South East Queensland#Merge proposals, where some editors also supported this name change. I can’t move this article due to technical reasons. Railways in Brisbane[edit]

Hello, I just wanted to know why the article is called Railways in SEQ rather than Railways in Brisbane? It breaks consistency with the other Australian suburban railway pages.

And before you say that it's because they cover more than Brisbane, the Railways in Perth article contains the Mandurah Line and the Joondalup Line, which both leave the Greater Perth area. I remind you that Logan, Ipswich, Redlands, and Moreton Bay are still part of Greater Brisbane.

I think it would be worthwhile to move the article to "Railways in Brisbane".
