Actually, if one gets technical, none of the suggested spellings follow the recommended devanagri transliteration guidelines. The actual spelling of this term is Rāgmālā from the Hindi word रागमाला. Ragamala if re-translated into Hindi would be रगमल. If one was to use double aa to denote ā then the spelling "Raagmaalaa" would possibly be a more accurate English spelling. I find that when no scheme is followed, Ragmala has a better pronunciation than Ragamala because the second a puts an extra "uh" making it sound funny. Ashwin Batish

Great to meet up with you Badagnani! Glad to know you are enjoying my music :)Being new to this, I was admiring all the information available through this wiki. As a musician and an author, I'm finding that many of our Hindi and Sanskrit words are getting mispronounced and as difficult as it is to correct all this mess, I feel that someone has to take first step to start a discussion on how we can leave this knowledge intact in the hands of the future generations. I was pleasantly surprised to find ready tools that can translate on the fly and write Hindi by inputting phonetic English words. Wow. It'll be an impossible task for me, or anyone else, to discuss this in all the pages but if some key phrases can be addressed it will at least bring the point home. I know my children have little or no knowledge being born and raised here in the USA. I can already see their indifference in trying to pronounce our words correctly. I am trying to get the point across by having house lessons in Hindi.

Coming back to the Ragmala issue, I pondered on this spelling for a long time and did exactly what you suggest earlier in my works and found my own students mispronouncing it. So it is a tough call.

There are many articles on Indian classical music terms but many of them (including the ones on the specific ragas) are not in a good state or confusingly written. I have also started some, as I am interested in Hindustani music, such as Taan (music), Dadra, Dhun, Drut, Mehfil, Vilambit, Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar. Hindustani vocal music is much less known in the West than instrumental music, as you know. Your attention to any such articles will be greatly appreciated. Absolutely. It will be my pleasure. If you can direct me towards any of these I will be happy to chime in. I am currently looking into the devanagari transliteration scheme and have found it to be extremely helpful. I am trying to learn how to incorporate it into my own web sites. It would eliminate all the pronunciation problems and provide consistency for not just Westerners but also for Indians using English to give an accurate explanation of their culture and traditions. On the north Indian raga side, my father Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and I recorded many of the raga names in our Rasik Raga Lakshan Manjari work. These would be great to include here. Is there a way to put click-able audio on the wiki? I will be putting up these sound bites on my sites and could also provide links into wiki.
