The word "differentiating"[edit]

I still do not think that this sentene is worded correctly: Also differentiating the fifth game from the first four games were the soundtrack, featuring music by Emmy-winning composer Chance Thomas, and a new graphics engine programmed by Eric Lengyel. It may be because of the section that I bolded breaks the flow of the sentance. I could be wrong but in my mind it is not correct in some way. To say that one cannot use the word diffenterial is incorrect see the words defenition. dif·fer·en·tial adj.

  2. Constituting or making a difference; distinctive.
  3. Dependent on or making use of a specific difference or distinction.

n.

  1. Mathematics.
        1. An infinitesimal increment in a variable.
        2. The product of the derivative of a function containing one variable and the increment of the independent variable.
  2. Differential gear.
  3. A difference between comparable things, as in wage rate or in price.

The clause about featuring music from the composer does make it sound a little odd, but the sentence is grammatically correct. This sentence sounds fine: "Also differentiating the fifth game from the first four games were the soundtrack and a new graphics engine." Perhaps the two items should be reversed with the "featuring" clause at the end to make it sound more clear. In any case, the verb should be plural.
The word "differential", used as a noun, normally refers to some kind of quantifiable difference between two items of the same type. For instance, you could speak of the differential in gases prices between yesterday and today or the differential in CPU clock speeds between two computers. But it doesn't really sound right to speak of a "differential" between two video games, or two people, etc. The original sentence used the verb "differentiate" in a reversal of the sentence "The soundtrack and a new graphics engine also differentiate the fifth game from the previous four." You could also say "The fifth game is also differentiated from the first four by the soundtrack and a new graphics engine." I still believe the original sentence sounds the best by saying "Also differentiating the fifth game from the first four were the soundtrack and a new graphics engine" because it's continuing a discussion of differences between QFG1-4 and QFG5, and the first words in the sentence convey that this is happening. I think that I figured out the confusing part of the sentance and it the part which is between the commas breaks the sentance and makes it harder to follow. Maby it would be better as:
Also differentiating the fifth game from the first four games were the soundtrack (featuring music by Emmy-winning composer Chance Thomas) and a new graphics engine programmed by Eric Lengyel. Andrew D White 12:40, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How about this?
Also differentiating the fifth game from the first four were an impressive soundtrack by Emmy-winning composer Chance Thomas and a new graphics engine programmed by Eric Lengyel. Gremagor 03:29, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That one is much more understandable. :) Andrew D White 23:13, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
