/* Independence Day */

Untitled[edit]

Are there two Cuban Independence Days? October 12th ("Anniversary of the transfer of power from Spain in 1902") & May 20th ("This day in 1868, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, "Father of the Homeland", gave freedom to his slaves and started the independence war against the Spanish colonial power, which led to the Ten Years' War")?

I think that you have the two the wrong way round. October 10 was the date of the "Grito de Yara" which marked the fist real attempt at independence. May 20 was the date when the US occupying forces transferred power to the new government. The current regime doesn't not recognise that date, as they say it wasn't a true independence. (Pointing to the Platt Amendment that the US included in Cuba's constitution etc.). -- Beardo (talk) 13:24, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Year holidays[edit]

Starting 31.12.07, 31.12 and 2.1 are also official holidays. -- Beardo (talk) 13:24, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Verifiable sources[edit]

The only source listed at the moment is http://www.worldtravelguide.net/cuba/public-holidays - I don't know how reliable that source normally is, but it includes May 20 which is NOT a public holiday in Cuba, and does not list Good Friday which now is - http://www.granma.cu/cuba/2014-04-15/recesan-las-actividades-laborales-el-viernes-18-de-abril. -- Beardo (talk) 14:44, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
