Sample words[edit]

There is an explanation for how these words are reconstructed. It seems that stress fell on the penultimate syllable if the word ended in a vowel; else it fell on the final syllable, so the same Proto-Oceanic form gives two different Proto-Temotu forms. Though, given the conservatism of the proto-language, with reference to the 2021 article, I would reconstruct these in Proto-Temotu as:

  • *lamúk > *yamúk "mosquito" (< POc *ñamuk): AIW n/amo, NAT mo, NEB muyë, ASU muso, TNB no/muyo, BUM muko, VNO muka, TNM muka
  • *limá- > *yimá- "hand" (< POc *lima-): AIW ñ/ime, NAT , NAG n/ümü, ASU na/ma, TNB na/ba, BUM ma, VNO me, TNM me
  • *líma "five" (< POc *lima): AIW vi/li, NAT nӓ/lvü/n (< *na limá-ña), ASU si/ni, BUM ti/li, VNO te/li, TNM te/li
  • *lúa "two" (< POc *rua): AIW li/lu, NAT li, NAG la/li, tü/li, NEB l/lu, ASU yuw, TNB bu/yu, BUM ti/lu, VNO ta/ru, TNM la/lu
  • *lumʷáq "house" (< POc *Rumaq): AIW nu/umӓ, NAT ma, NAG ma/athu, NEB naa/më, ASU nu/muo, TNB no/mʷa, BUM mʷoe, VNO mʷoe, TNM na/lama
