Notability

The notability of this credential was questioned by User:Ukexpat but no comments were added to the talk page. There are 5 times as many people with PMP certification as CISSP certification and there is no notability tag there. There should be objective criteria for notability for credentials/certification of this kind. I don't know if either is sufficiently notable but the objective standard of number of credential-holders suggests PMP is more notable than CISSP. Over 1 million people currently have this certification. The job site Dice lists the PMP as one of the top 12 certifications for a management postition.[1] (From the graph, it was the top of the 12, although Dice focuses on IT positions, so it may not be the top certification for other industries.) The notability tag has been on this article for about 8 months. I think it could be removed. No. PMP certification requires passing the PMBOK exam (which requires memorization of the PMBOK standards), a certain number of Professional Development Units (classroom hours in management practices, often just exam prep courses) and a certain number of hours working on projects -- but not necessarily in project management. It is quite possible to get PMP certified while having little or no skill in actual project management -- and far more possible to be an excellent project manager without ever having sat for the PMP exam. Is there any plus points with this certificate while switching job?

It may be an advantage if you are applying for a job as a project manager, a project consultant, or an agency that has oversite on projects. Employers that require a PMP will usually say so in the job requirments. (Macossay, 24 Mar 2012)

It costs U$405.00 to sit for the exam with a PMI Membership that costs U$139.00 (annual renewal is $129, but not required to maintain membership). The exam fee is U$555.00 without a membership, but not advisable, as you can't download the PMBOK(R) Guide that is the core material for the exam. Only beneficial for IT or Engineering professional???

All US Goverment Agencies use the PMI standards for Project Management. Most state and local goverments are adopting it too because the process helps maintain the cost of a project.

Hi I want to know about the scope of PMP. Is it only limited to IT or other Engineering Streams??? Can an Ordinary employee from a BPO befefited by this??

The PMP exam is based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge. The PMBOK is a standard, a collection of definitions, formulas, and descriptions of best practices. It is not a textbook or a methodology. It does not teach you how to manage projects. Knowledge of the PMBOK will not help you manage projects any more than knowledge of pipe codes will teach you to install plumbing. The utility of the PMBOK standard is that employees who are assigned to a project can immediately grasp the terminolgy, rather than flounder around trying to make sense of management jargon. Therefore it is beneficial to anyone assigned to a project team, not just the project manager. Nonetheless, the Project Management Institute tries to promote the idea that managers should be regarded as professionals, in the same sense as engineers and CPAs. Therefore it tends to overstate the value of the PMP. (Macossay, 24 Mar 2012)

Overview change suggestions

PMP -- Purpose, Advantages, Methodology

The page talks a lot about PMP credentialing, but I think it could / should focus more on the methodology itself. For example, how does PMP tie in with SDLC, waterfall, agile, etc. It would be nice to have a section on methodology, a separate section on PMP credentialing, and perhaps a separate section on the PMP exam. The PMP credential is not a methodology but a certification, and I think that the article should focus on the exam with its prerequisites, process and purpose.

Using Wikipedia for business promotion

The Institute is a not-for-profit but it very clearly charges for membership, testing and certification and renewal. The Institute has remunerated staff and consultants. Using Wikipedia to promote this, as this article clearly does, is a red flag and there for not to be accepted as credible source.

As they say, "I love Wikipedia, It lets you make things up" There is no way that this article can arguably be considered informative when it is so blatantly promotional. Malangthon (talk) 20:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

As this article is referring specifically to the product PMP that's offered by the company, I don't think it should be considered promotional. Though it is discussing a particular company's product, it is clear that this is the intention of the page and any entity of information can (and should...that'd be nice) have an article, and it is natural that it will include information that may lead to people purchasing this product. Someone who is considering this purchase, for instance, may search and find this article and look for information to guide their decision. Focus on Credential, Not Exam

The article should be changed to focus on the PMP credential. The exam is only part of the requirements to get the PMP certification. And the PMP is a certification that must be maintained with on-going education. It's reasonable to cover the exam, but it shouldn't be the primary topic of the article. -RobinLampert (talk) 01:15, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Notability tag should be removed

This is THE flagship certification of Project Management for almost 40years. More known than Prince2 & other governmental standards. Almost a million people certified and often pop ups directly quoted in Job Ads. Also has Wiki Articles in 12 other languages.
