Pounds?[edit]

Why are the records given in pounds? Most of the world uses kilograms. I'm confused by this "pounds" thing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.5.248.63 (talk) 08:35, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps because most events measure in pounds? You can always do some conversions and add kg's next to the records.--Yankees76 (talk) 00:43, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
NB. This has since been corrected. JeffUK 13:58, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Records Are Set in Meets Not MInds[edit]

Issac Nesser should not be credited on this or any other artlicle regarding the bench press. He has never competed in a meet or even released a video to back up his outrageous claims, which always seem to increase as the records go up. I removed him and would hope no one re-adds him until he backs up his talk with a lift.

Also while Ronnie Coleman is a very strong lifter, there is no need to add to his credentials by listing his bench press as +400kgs. It's an insult to the handfull of people in the +400kg range.

Shirts[edit]

I added a neutral statement about shirts. Say what you will about whether they should be allowed, this article should include their use if it is presenting unbiased information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex Klotz (talkcontribs) 19:16, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If this is going to be a big deal (and from the dust-up about who broke what record it looks like it is a big deal) we need to separate out each of the governing bodies records from one another and note the circumstances of each record. If we don't go so far as to separate each record we need to note the circumstances of the lift so we can remain neutral about the whole thing. We're not saying right wrong or indifferent but we must acknowledge the difference in the types of lifts and the circumstances of the lift. Padillah (talk) 14:41, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First paragraph states: "Bench press world records are the international records in bench press across the years, regardless of weight class or governing organization". If a lift is backed by a verifiable source that states it's a world record, it's included. This avoids POV, original research and fancruft additions, and also avoids confusion - as pre-1960's records were kept by magazine writers and reporters (Powerlifting was not sactioned in the United States before 1962). If a federation or governing body is notable enough to have a Wikipedia page, then that page could include their own records in various weight classes for the bench press, deadlift, squat and overall - otherwise this page will be an extremely long page that will be near impossible to accurately source. This list alone is not complete despite hours of research, and is still missing strong sources for the last 5 records. --Yankees76 (talk) 15:05, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List is misnamed.[edit]

I think this list is misnamed. This is not a list of records, it's a lit of firsts. As such it should be renamed to "List of bench press firsts". Does anyone have an issue with this? Padillah (talk) 21:09, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article is woefully incomplete. Each lift included was at one point a World Record, which makes the title partially correct. The format and presentation needs some editing work. --Quartet 21:24, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Something like World record progression 100 metres men should be designed for this page.--Quartet 21:27, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WOW! We could only hope to turn this into that. Let's pick a name first. Following our idol, how about — "World record progression bench press"? Padillah (talk) 21:31, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it can be done. The problem is sourcing the records which is much more difficult than finding the worlds fastest man, and then keeping it to just World Records. I do like the title though. --Quartet 21:36, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've never renamed an article before. How does one go about this? --Quartet 00:53, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Given the pages history, I don't have a problem with that. You "Rename" it by using the "Move" tab up at the top, next to the "History" tab. It'll ask for a new name and reason. Make sure you type the new name correctly (this is mostly a problem with special characters) and say "More appropriate title" (or some such thing). Then click "Move Page" and POOF!! your first move. For uncontentious moves like this you can do it yourself. If there's a problem then we need to go through a series of steps and discussion to determine the correct name and have an admin do the move. So please, knock yourself out and I'll catch the "new" article tomorrow. Padillah (talk) 01:49, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can do it. --Yankees76 (talk) 02:54, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone can do it, I was trying to let Quartet make his first "Page Move". Oh, well. And I thought we agreed on a different name. Not that I mind, it's still better than the old name, but it does bring up a good point, is there a naming convention for this type of article? Padillah (talk) 13:42, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Early bird gets the worm. Sorry Quartet. I based the title on the Progression of the single-season MLB home run record as I thought it was easier to read and "World record progression bench press" didn't seem to be grammatically correct. I don't think there is a universal Wikipedia protocol of naming such types of articles. --Yankees76 (talk) 14:44, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Feh, I tried, sorry Quartet. I don't think there's likely to be a naming convention with these articles being as disparate as they are. Well, let's see what we can do about format and content. Padillah (talk) 14:56, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That could take awhile. As we've seen with the bench press page, there is no one definitive source for bench press records. There are many federations and many classifications of competitions and some editors have strong feelings about drug tested vs. non drug tested, assissted vs. raw etc. etc. which could make this a long process....--Yankees76 (talk) 16:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! - nothing personal guys - don't worry. I didn't realize how easy it was! It's done and that's what matters. --Quartet 20:08, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources again[edit]

Removed some unsourced; list could be split into different sub-lists, like raw, assisted, drug tested, etc. if sourced; each list and the article overall could lead in with a brief summary of the differences between them and why it's significant. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 21:39, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think some of the records removed were sourced from this blog entry/article. [1] not a reliable source, but a good start to know what to look for to have Confessore, Rychlak etcs. records re-added. --Quartet 22:03, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not entirely clear why the pride powerlifting event is considered non-verifiable, but if we don't agree that that particular lift should be included, I am cool with that. I know it doesn't state that it was in fact a world record, but few places that report results of their events do. I have tried to dig up as many sources as possible, and am glad the decision was made to remove the others. (I hope I did this talk page thing right).yaliemc99 05:41, 02 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Added alot to this list today. I need a source for Ken Lain's 722 lb. WR lift from November 24, 1990, if anyone has one please post it here. --Yankees76 (talk) 21:09, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! Kenneth Lain was on the article before, but I didn't see a source. I think the whole article was copy and pasted word for word before from a number of powerlifting sites, so how much of it was correct is hard to determine. I heard Chris Confessore had a world record too. Muscle & Fitness and FLEX magazines used to talk about him alot - there may be some info there.--Quartet 21:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We also need a source for Jamie Harris 740 lb. lift in 1995 that he talks about here: [2]--Yankees76 (talk) 05:12, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That lift was in March of '95. [3] So far Google doesn't yield much. --Quartet 16:29, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sarychev Kirill world record[edit]

Just added but not sure how to do source: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/31326. Can someone add? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamvanauken (talkcontribs) 19:51, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

April Mathis[edit]

I don't know enough about this topic to feel comfortable adding it, but can someone add the record for April Mathis, for the women's raw record? They have the shirt records listed but not the raw record. Sephiroth storm (talk) 13:13, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Stylistic inconsistencies in second paragraph[edit]

I noticed that in the second paragraph, all weights are given in pounds, converted to kilograms. In the rest of the article however, weights are given in kilograms, converted to pounds. I would edit this myself, but I'm not familiar enough with the conversion function to be comfortable changing it. ConcernedTyrannosaur (talk) 18:31, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
