No, the "Vernissage" page shouldn't be merged into "Private view". They are complementary but not identical concepts. The private view is invitation only. It's usually for collectors, press and other insiders. The vernissage is a technical term for the party held at the opening of the event. It's most usually open to the public. As an example of how a vernissage is not a private view, in cities with monthly art walks or art nights the galleries will often coordinate their show schedules so that a new show opens on the night of the community art event. This is a predictable and regular event. These openings are open to the public. Therefore, they are not private viewings.

At most I suggest cross-linking, because both terms have to do with the practice of showing art to viewers in a formal setting. However that's the limit of the similarity.

I agree: do not merge them. I went to this page becase someone asked me why he was being invited to a vernissage, was there varnishing happening? I found out from the page and forwarded it to him. I would never have thought to look under private viewing. Private views are not invitation-only in the UK

The name is misleading. Generally, a private view is not an invitation-only event and is open to anyone. It is more of a festive opening to an exhibition. It is identical to a vernissage. In the UK nobody uses the words vernissage or opening, everyone says private view. These pages should be merged. Ideasmete (talk) 11:31, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
