Firefighters[edit]

I took out this sentence: "The city rewarded the efforts of the fallen fire fighters by denying lifetime benefits to 13 of the 19 fire fighter's families.[1], [2],[3]" because it is extremely sarcastic and much too biased against the city (see WP:NPOV). I'm not totally opposed to having the controversy over benefits included in the article (though I'm not sure it's noteworthy enough), but can we at least do it in a way that treats the issue and both sides fairly instead of sarcastic attacks? 24.116.229.5 (talk) 06:52, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

I cut the list of "movies made or partially made in Prescott". It is pasted below. Would more experienced editors please comment, explain or edit the page re this issue? This entry, at least in its present form, had a strongly negative impact on the reference value of the Prescott, Arizona page. It significantly lengthened the page, and created an impression that Prescott's major point of interest is that movies 'or parts of movies' are filmed here. This is untrue. I think the author of this section could make a separate page, and link to it from the Prescott page.

Prescott has been a favorite of movie-makers over the years. The movies Junior Bonner and Billy Jack were filmed in Prescott at the Palace Hotel, Courthouse Square and surrounding areas. A 1994 remake of The Getaway was partially filmed in Prescott at locations such as Watson Lake and many of the downtown area streets. Other films that were made in Prescott - or partially in Prescott - and the year they were made are:

As a native of Arizona, I can tell you that Prescott's common pronunciation is PRES-kot and not pres-KOT. User:70.59.251.167 has reverted my correction. If you have any objections please voice them here before reverting again. -- Barfooz (talk) 07:07, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, as yet another proud native of Prescott, there are two pronunciations of the name. PRES-kot, and PRES-kit. Most people I know use the latter, but both are common and in my opinion neither are wrong. -- Nautafoeda (talk)

We always called it PRES-kit, rhymes with biscuit. As in "going into the biscuit for beer, be back in an hour". As in (this is what I have always heard): "Preskit, like biscuit, because its as white as a baking powder biscuit." When confronted, real estate agents will admit that PresKITT is a common selling ploy they use to encourage that "hometown" feeling. Melissa Ruffner, town historian, researched the proper pronunciation and tracked down the family of William Hickling Prescott. She found them in Chicago and asked them how their family name was pronounced. They stated it was PresKITT. However, the word comes from a Gaelic word meaning priests cottage and in Gaelic, it would be pronounced Presskot following the Gaelic way. The family of William Hickling had changed their name once moving in the new area, had they known how to properly pronounce Presscott then the confusion would be cleared up. So now you know the FACTS behind the pronunciations. Prescott Native born and raised.

It's obvious that - as you've pointed out - we both feel we're right and that will not change. Minor query where's Arizona? Whiskey row runs between E. Goodwin and Gurley? Actually it's the first block of W. Goodwin which divides at Cortez. I recommend removing the direction altogether for consistency. Rijkstra 16:01, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is not correct. Whiskey Row is one block of Montezuma Street-the block between Gurley and Goodwin. City street signs say "Whiskey Row" for that one block. I have asked the city manager to provide "official" information. --Laurel 17:19, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Quad Cities/Communities?[edit]

I don't have the statistics to edit the entry myself, but could the "Tri-Cities" reference possibly be updated to "Quad Cities" or whatever they are calling it with the inclusion of Dewey-Humboldt? Sreneec (talk) 04:27, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dewey-Humbolt used to be Dewey and Humbolt as seperate towns and that area was referred to as Dewey-Humbolt-Mayer. At that time, Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley were known as the Tri-City area with many business called Tri-City this-and-that. Then Prescott Valley tried to Annex Dewey and the residents didn't want their kids in that school zone, so they united with Humbolt and forced the Quad-City idea. Dewey and Humbolt are out past the Prescott Country Club and Quailwood Meadows which have more people in it, and Dewey-Humbolt is equal-distant between Prescott Valley and Mayer. 2009 Mayoral Election[edit]

I don't believe this section fits on this page. It seems like the mayor or someone added this for personal purposes. The rest of the page does not discuss specific elections and the mayor's plans for re-election the same way. I think it should be deleted or just included in the prior section, "Government". Would someone use their judgement on this? I live in Prescott so may not have an objective viewpoint. This is just how it struck me. I agree that the 2009 Mayoral election is inappropriate. It is drilling down to a level of detail that is inappropriate. If we want a wiki page on Prescott mayoral elections, we can put it there. I just noticed it was myself who made the earlier note. Neighborhood descriptions[edit]

The entire paragraph starting with "While Prescott is known for its western and cowboy feel..." appears to be someone's opinion rather than any real facts about Prescott. Missing Notable residents[edit]

I'm not sure what qualifications are required to be listed among the other Notables, but I am very surprised that William Owen "Buckey" O'Neill is not included among them. There is a prominent statue dedicated to him in front of the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott and his own page on Wikipedia. He was a very colorful character, having been elected as a sheriff, and a judge in Yavapai County, Arizona, then unanimously Major of Prescott. He served honorably with Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, dieing during the battle at Kettle Hill, Cuba. Is it just oversight that he is not included? UNDER CULTURE[edit]

I do not know how to update the pages, but I'd like to point out two corrections/changes (I am a resident): Under golf courses in Prescott, Talking Rock is not mentioned, it should be as it IS a Prescott Address, albeit a bit further from "downtown". Also, the mention of the Gingerbread Village - its actually located at the Prescott Resort & Conference center free of charge (and yes the resort IS on Yavapai Prescott Indian Tribe land). Pronunciation[edit]

Why is the pronunciation on the page "Press-cot" rather than the preferred local pronunciation of "Press-kit?" I see conversations below regarding this, but the conclusion that it should be the former is a poor one. William Prescott pronounced it "Press-kit." Regardless of the origin of the name or how his descendants might say it, the proper pronunciation is how Prescott himself said it. Stormkith (talk) 08:05, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

/ˈprɛskət/ is far from "Press-cot" and the same as "Press-kit", at least for most Americans (Flemming & Johnson 2007:95). The vowel in cot is /ɒ/ (equivalent to "ä" in Merriam-Webster and "ŏ" in AHD). Listen to samples on dictionary sites: [4][5][6]. Nardog (talk) 15:19, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the addition of that IPA entry came after my suggestion to change the pronunciation (which was listed as simple text at the time).
