According to my records the station was originally called Portsmouth (Lancashire) but it would appear that the county boundary had been changed since the station closed....[[Steamybrian (talk) 14:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC)]][reply]

The station was originally called "Portsmouth", there being no other Portsmouth on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, or its successor the LMS. It was renamed "Portsmouth (Lancs)" by BR (to avoid confusion with the more well-known city on the South Coast), but no date is given by Butt (p. 190). This must have been between 1 Jan 1948 (formation of BR) and 7 July 1958 (closure). The Lancs/Yorks county boundary has been redrawn more than once (and not without controversy and local anger, I can tell you), one of the reasons being to get the whole Todmorden area into one county (at one time, the boundary actually ran through Todmorden town hall). I have found an Ordnance Survey map dated 1953 (ie before closure) which shows Portsmouth station as being inside Yorkshire - by less than 200 yards. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:56, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The county probably should be listed as The West Riding of Yorkshire as that was the county the statin was in for the majority of its service. However, I think the title should be changed to a less confusing one, maybe "Portsmouth railway station, Todmorden" to avoid the county issue which being from Todmorden I know is a particularly strong issue (Yorkshire of course being the better place to be ;-) ) --Lemonade100 19:26, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

This is still very confusing. The latest edit says "the village of Portsmouth, which was in Lancashire, before being moved into the West Riding of Yorkshire in the late 1880s, now in the successor county of West Yorkshire", but if that is really true it begs the question why would BR rename it "Portsmouth (Lancs)" if it was in Yorkshire? Or maybe the station was in Yorkshire but the village was in Lancashire? -- Dr Greg talk 21:01, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image problem[edit]

The cited photograph does not show the site of the Portsmouth station. It appears to be taken in open country. There have been houses alongside what was the station site since pre-fabs were built on the Lennox Rd allotments shortly after the second world war. There was, and to my knowledge still is, a level crossing which was situated at the Burnley end of the platforms. I don't know the area personally, but examining the old OS maps showing the station and modern-day satellite images of the same location, I agree, this photo looks incorrect (probably half-a-mile to a mile further north west), so I have removed it.
