Deleted Material[edit]

I removed the following material which had been erroneously attributed to Stephen:

Stephen turned to Pippin the Younger, Mayor of the Palace of the Kingdom of the Franks. Pippin took the opportunity to ask Stephen the question: "Who should be king of the Franks: the one with the title or the one with the power?" Stephen agreed that the one with the power should be King of the Franks. Pippin deposed Childeric III and the Franks chose Pippin as King.

This exchange actually occurred between Pippin (via St. Boniface) and Pope Zacharias, and Pippin was crowned king in 751, the year before Stephen III's papacy began. That is, unless someone is using some source I've never seen. Luchaire 08:41, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming page[edit]

The discussion of "Renaming page" began with a focus on the narrrow issue of a Requested move of Pope Stephen III to Pope Stephen II, to parallel the 1961 change of the approach used in a Vatican-published list of saints.

The contents of the discussion that ensued in 2006 February now appear, archived (since it was oversized) and located (since its scope is about as broad as that of the Dab Pope Stephen) at Talk:Pope Stephen/Renaming, Archive I and Talk:Pope Stephen/Renaming, Archive II. Its scope is roughly

the titling of the bios of the last nine of the ten people who have been widely described as popes named Stephen,
including the next person after Pope Stephen I to be elected pope and choose Stephen as his regnal name, who was never consecrated as pope.

(The history prior to 14:29, 2 March 2006 (UTC) of the talk page previously bearing this page's name is at this writing the bulk of the history of Talk:Pope Stephen/Renaming, Archive II, and likely to remain there.) Refactoring of the content onto other talk subpages there is proposed. The discussion is expected to continue.

One exchange within the "Renaming page" discussion applies strictly to this page's corresponding article, and could be conceivably be sought here in response to reading the history of Wikipedia:Requested moves; those doing so may, or not, want to see the discussion the intervened, both in time and on the page, between the two messages copied. It is copied here, reindented:

I've asked for the renaming or this page on Wikipedia:Requested_moves. Here is what I wrote:
Talk:Pope Stephen IIIPope Stephen IIIPope Stephen II – He is called Stephen II on all lists published by the Vatican since 1961 and the eviction of the "former pope Stephen II". The only reson this change has not been considered on Wikipedia (except in French, German and Dutch versions) is the lists are based on the 1913 edition of the catholic Encyclopedia because it's in the public domain! (detailed explanations are here: Stephen (ephemeral pope) This page was formerly Pope Stephen II, but of course a better name could be found). After Stephen III has been renamed Stephen II, I'll have to rename all the "popes Stephen" pages the same way, ending with Pope Stephen X into Pope Stephen IX. — Švitrigaila 17:13, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[Much discussion intervened.]
I don't think this is a case for a WP:RM, but rather something you should work out consensually. Come back to me or any other admin (unless one of you is one) if you need help after having found a solution. Cheers! —Nightstallion (?) 09:33, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forgery[edit]

Did this pope send a letter ( supposedly from St. Peter in heaven) telling Pepin that he had to help against the Lombards? I have seen this repeated in a couple of histories, but no documentation of it. 213.205.251.32 (talk) 06:36, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date[edit]

In the entry under Pope Paul I, his birth date is listed as 700. He was the younger brother of Stephen. Here Stephen's birth date is listed as '714'. How to reconcile? --Gepid (talk) 18:39, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
