Possible source for them being used in WW2[edit]

I remember the book 'Citizen Soldiers' going into detail about a significant battle over these types of forts in WW2. I think it was one of Patton's battles - quite possibly Metz looking at the wikipedia article.

I'd get more info, but I don't have the book at the moment so can't verify it for certain.
