Has she died?[edit]

did a she die today/yesterday? recently added " 25.04 2011 Poly sadly loses her battle against Cancer and died peacfully with her family present." - doesn't seem to be anything offical just people posting R.I.P on Facebook & Twitter (+ other posts asking about "the rumour". 109.224.137.121 (talk) 00:10, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have also heard this, but no confirmation as yet. Terribly sad if true. Matthau (talk) 00:51, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Taking it out until it's confirmed. I hope it's not. Totnesmartin (talk) 08:27, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've requested the article be locked until this is sorted out. Shouldn't take long. Totnesmartin (talk) 08:33, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

She's dead, it's been confirmed by multiple news sources now. http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a316400/poly-styrene-dies-aged-53.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wickedxjade (talkcontribs) 08:58, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(protecting admin)I'm not sure that Digital Spy would be considered a reliable source. It seems to be the British equivalent of TMZ, and its sources for the story appear to be Facebook and Twitter. If a more substantial source becomes available before the six hours is up (or if Digital Spy is judged acceptable as a source) any admin is free to lift the protection without consulting me. If I happen to notice any reliable sources, I'll be glad to do it myself. --Bongwarrior (talk) 09:19, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This, on the other hand, does appear reliable: http://www.nme.com/news/x-ray-spex/56316. Unprotect? --Bongwarrior (talk) 09:27, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Point is moot - the ref had already been added to the article before I noticed it. I've unprotected the article. --Bongwarrior (talk) 09:35, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's on the BBC [1]  :( 81.156.126.53 (talk) 09:42, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good source[edit]

For adding more information when this is unprotected: [2]. 81.156.126.53 (talk) 09:14, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Correct spelling of name[edit]

There is an entry on the Twitter feed (that the BBC says is her official Twitter feed ([3] but which isn't certified as such on Twitter) which says her name is spelled Marianne. 81.156.126.53 (talk) 10:03, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The lead singer's name is spelled differently by different media outlets. Marion [4] Elliott-Said in USA Today, Marian[5] in The Independent and Marianne[6] in the BBC. Not sure which is the right one. The book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die says it's Marion. Googling isn't much help.Timtempleton (talk) 22:09, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Personal name in text[edit]

The current version of the article refers to her, variously, as "Poly", "Styrene", and "Poly Styrene" - even in discussing her childhood. Nowhere (apart from the first sentence) does it use her real name. My view is that, in the section on her childhood, we should use her real name, Marianne Elliott-Said - or Elliott-Said, or Marianne. After she began using the name "Poly Styrene", it would be better to use that name - but as a whole. It seems bizarre to me to use either "Poly" or "Styrene" as though those were her first and second names. It's one of those articles where it's probably best to use the word "she" as much as possible, so long as the context is clear. What do others think? Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:54, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think yes. Rothorpe (talk) 13:12, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Using Styrene seems akin to referring to Sitting Bull as Bull. And it's an unfortunate twist of the language would leave a hasty reader, on reading "Elliott-Said", thinking "what did Elliott say?". Use of first names looks un-encyclopedic, doubly so when there's no danger of confusing Poly Styrene with a husband, Mr Styrene. "She" looks the sensible option. Bazj (talk) 14:01, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried to tidy it up a little - much more work needed though. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:59, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Close paraphrasing[edit]

A fair bit of this article appears to be close paraphrasing of the Telegraph obituary here. I've not checked whether other aspects may also be close paraphrases of other sources, but it does not sit particularly well. - Sitush (talk) 00:25, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shocking grammar[edit]

Re: Music Career / X-Ray Spex section, the following needs to be rewritten, shocking grammar: "So it was from that, she went as singer with X-Ray Spex, Poly Styrene". Doesn't really make sense at it is. Thanks.

Picture[edit]

An image of Poly Styrene rocking out in her youth would be really great. I hope someone finds one that can be used here. Givemedonuts (talk) 10:42, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ska music[edit]

The article says her first single was influenced by then popular ska music. Ska music was not popular at that time. It had been popular in the mid-60's and was very popular in UK in 1979/80 when revived by The Specials, but not at the time of her single. 192.252.235.104 (talk) 02:47, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need to edit preview text for this page[edit]

While viewing the X-Ray Spex page (which of course links to Poly Styrene's page) I noticed that the preview text when you hover over this link has a nasty, racist description rather than the text that actually appears at the top of Poly Styrene's entry. I'm newish to WP and don't know how to fix this -- hope somebody else does. Themadwiggler (talk) 19:16, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've just hovered over Poly Styrene's name on the X-Ray Spex page and I just got some text saying 'Poly Styrene'. Unknown Unknowns (talk) 16:45, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's very strange. Because when I mouse over (which I did again just now) the preview text that I see is: "Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, known by the stage name Poly Styrene, was an mulatto n***** whose mom was a mud shark, thankfully both are dead."
