I feel compelled to question the listing of James P. T. Carter as a Republican. Before the American Civil War, Carter sympathized with the Whigs but was largely apolitical. During his time as Secretary, Carter openly supported the Democratic cause. While it is true that he was appointed by a Republican president, Johnson was at odds with much of his party and Carter's appointment was probably due as much to his being a personal friend of Johnson as to his party loyalty. --Allen3 talk 19:17, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
