fencing ref[edit]

The article is talking about fencing at the Waikoloa dry forest, which is way makai of PTA (14 miles, or 6 miles from the new addition). The press release was put out by the army because they helped with the work, but it wasn't on their land. Note that they're talking about protecting wiliwili, which doesn't grow that high up. Large portions of PTA are indeed fenced, but I don't know of a reference for it (I believe they were actually completed back around 2001 or so, because there are some pretty big trees coming up inside, but I'm not sure). Cheeseburgers in Paradise[edit]

I trained up there around 1997-98. I remember there was an all-hands club in the base camp with a greasy-spoon kind of restaurant that made one of the best cheeseburgers I ever had in my life. I'm dead serious. "open to public"[edit]

Part of PTA is a cooperative game management area, which means that licensed hunters can go in with approval. I believe it's a fairly onerous process though, and it's frequently closed for training and such. So on the one hand it's a "public hunting area", but it's hardly open access. Ah, yes, I remember running across something like that. So we need to make it clear there is no visitor's center or tours of the garrison.
