Dates[edit]

I have noticed that Newport (Cornwall) (UK Parliament constituency) has Piers Edgcumbe being returned in 1662, outside the life as stated in this article and is backed up in Leigh Rayment's Historical List of MPs. But Leigh Rayment has Piers being alive 1610-1667. Therefore are there 2 Piers Edgecumbes at this time, or are they one-in-the-same and one of the sources has the dates wrong? Any ideas? Well done on the source! Next question: do you think that he did die in 1666 as the source says and his seat was left vaccant until 'elections' in 1667, or Leigh Rayment is correct and he died in 1667 - my feeling is that it's the former. Before the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 the years officially started in March so January dates had the previous year - this was particularly the case with parish records. Nowadays we adjust historical dates to be consistent with present and I am assuming (which may be wrong) that this is an instance. By the by, the inland revenue did not want to lose out by this or on the change to the gregorian calendar which took 14 days out of the calendar - hence the tax year starts on April 6.
