Early 50’s in piedmont Mercer co wv[edit]

My grandfather Mr. Wilson was a supervisor at the tipple and lived on the hill above the Company store. I distinctly remember the general store which was loaded with utility items such as galoshes bluejeans with a butcher shop and miscellaneous grocery items. The house by the company and was comfortable with three bedrooms and a telephone with the party line. There was a drainage system for collecting rainwater; And an outdoor shed for curing ham with salt. A grandfather is always proud to show a sample of his most recent collection of moonshine called “panther piss”. My grandfather had a reputation for designing tipples and also was a temple foreman he drove a company car and had two fingers missing from the sawmill; he never wore teeth and he constantly smoking cigars. He loves to take me and my grandmother to Matoaka and buy a pint of Pet ice cream at Piggly Wiggly while he visited the Moose Lodge at the end. of the Main Street. A grand mother and I would always go to a matinee movie with the western and she would play Celeys with me with a bag of popcorn until the end.

My mother gave me at interesting bit of history she was the number three daughter and was born at home and Wade only 1 pound. The doctor visited but felt there was no chance of survival. My grandmother placed my mother in a shoebox and placed her in the coal oven and she was fed but a dropper with bourbon and water for the first week. The doctor returned in a week or so surprised to find my mother still alive. She survived and had four proud sons all of the medical profession profession as medical doctors.
