Elswick Cruisers[edit]

While Watts designed many of Elswick's world-famous cruisers, he did not originate the formula of high speed, powerful armament and modestly-sized steel hull & protective deck; this was the creation of previous Elswick design chiefs George Rendel & William White, the latter of whom Watts succeeded upon White taking up a post with the Admiralty as DNC.
