Elswick Cruisers[edit]

While Watts designed many of Elswick's world-famous cruisers, he did not originate the formula of high speed, powerful armament and modestly-sized steel hull & protective deck; this was the creation of previous Elswick design chiefs George Rendel & William White, the latter of whom Watts succeeded upon White taking up a post with the Admiralty as DNC. (Rendel's Esmeralda was the first full-fledged deck-protected "Elswick Cruiser", with White's improved derivative Naniwa setting the pattern.) 2A00:23C7:3119:AD01:A953:2DB5:D03:74FF (talk) 00:52, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
