Conflict of Interest[edit]

This article has insufficient references to justify the amount of biographical detail it contains; it might suggest Peter Kosminsky who has made a significant contribution to this article is closely related to its subject. Alistair Stevenson (talk) 13:33, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Kosminsky Wiki Page[edit]

I'm rather new to the Wiki thing but I am confused by this tag that has appeared at the top of my page. It appears to threaten to wipe the page. That's rather draconian. Who is proposing doing this and why? Or is this even the correct space for me to ask this question?

The message says not everyone wd expect to have their own page in an encyclopaedia. That's a rather insulting remark. I warrant a page in Who's Who. Don't I warrant a page in Wiki? The one that was there before was a stub and had been a stub for quite some time, until I updated it. After I updated it, other pitched in and made further improvements; I have not sought to undo their changes. Now it is a factually accurate page with lots of cross-references and useful links for journalists who are proposing interviewing me.

Perhaps one of you Wiki-experts wd be kind enough to explain?

Hello. The tag at the top of the page doesn't threaten to wipe the page, it just advises readers and editors that the article may need more checking because it appears to have been edited by someone connected with its subject and so may not be a truly independent view of them. It is generally discouraged for a person closely related to the subject of an article to edit their entry on Wikipedia, click on this link for further guidance. There's certainly no question of Peter Kosminsky's work not being notable enough for an article, or of this page being removed. Alistair Stevenson (talk) 20:28, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the swift reply. This is the text posted on my talk page that prompted my question/comment:

"...I notice that one of the first articles you created appears to be an article about yourself. This is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally. The page you created about yourself has been or will shortly be speedily deleted from Wikipedia..."

It's good to hear from you that there is no danger of the page being deleted. However, it is quite humiliating to have that banner right across the top of my page. Is there anything that can be done to remove it?

You're completely free to delete almost anything from your talk page, just click on edit and remove it then save. The fact that you've removed it is taken as acknowledgement that you've read it, so if anyone puts anything you don't like there you can rid yourself of it straight away. The message is a generic template, often placed very quickly without a lot of thought, please don't take offence. The work you've done on the article has clearly improved it without adding anything contentious or self-promotional. Thank you, Alistair - sorry to be so thick. I find Wiki fun but have very little understanding. I thought it better to use my own name than to masquerade! I'd be delighted to have others amend and improve the page but a number of press had commented on the fact of the stub so, one day, while watching the mixing editor doing battle with our troubled soundtrack, I decided to give it a go. I tried not to be too self-serving and really enjoyed doing it. I know press have made use of it over the last few crazy weeks.
