Untitled[edit]

"Bowles also played the smarmy Meres in the spin off movie of the Thames Television series Callan" Based on research in IMDb, I believe Bowles played Meres in the "prequel" to the series and the spin-off movie had Peter Egan as Meres (with Anthony Valentine playing Meres in the main series). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.163.138.12 (talk) 02:27, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that was a lot of work[edit]

I've heavily altered the article all the way through, occasionally in a substantive way but mostly to conform with standard WP linking, which meant removing a lot of redundant metatext. What remains was plainly originally written as a kind of resume/CV for Mr Bowles, but I don't know how many of the trivial theatre notices to remove; though doubtless the best answer is "a lot". Perhaps 'Channel 4 Films' should be substituted with FilmFour, and I can't place who and what 'Hutchinson' and 'The Beau' are. Harfarhs (talk) 22:31, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And I deleted the rest! 86.182.99.242 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 00:14, 5 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Does that help or hinder the availability of information? 2.31.166.186 (talk) 05:09, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Engineer?[edit]

If his father had been a chauffeur, how did he manage the enormous jump to 'engineer' during WWII?

I was not aware that engineering was an inherited gene rather than a learned skill. 2.31.166.186 (talk) 05:10, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If it is meant that he was 'manpowered' (as the expression was then) and sent to the Rolls Royce factory to build engines, it is far more likely that he was employed as a fitter, i.e. an assembler of engines, not a professional designer of engines. 121.44.86.246 (talk) 07:41, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Because no engineer had a working-class father? This smacks of irresponsible poppycock. Judge a man on his own merits - his father's profession is irrelevant. 2.31.166.186 (talk) 05:11, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Despite what many think, engineering is a profession just like medicine, etc. Would one expect a chauffeur to leave their job and take a position as a medical doctor without any obvious lengthy period of training? The same holds true of an engineer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.171.131.187 (talk) 23:13, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Name and place of birth[edit]

The FreeBMD entry for Bowles here shows he had a middle initial J and that his birth was registered in Kensington. I wonder if there are any secondary sources to back this up. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:54, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
