Correction on the northern end[edit]

If you look at a map, the north end of Peoria Lake is north, not south of McCluggage bridge. Will (Talk - contribs) 00:13, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Modern History notes[edit]

In the 20^th century, the mouth of Farm Creek was split in the name of flood control. One branch follows the original route of the creek. The other branch was directed north of I-74 into the lake. The relatively fast water flowing into the upstream direction of the lake resulted in a delta forming. Plus, just south of I-74, where Walmart is now, used to be a power plant. Fly ash was deposited to the north of the East Peoria foot of the Murray Baker Bridge (I-74). This polluted the lake.

Also, there used to be a series of islands in the middle of the lake. Those were eliminated, possibly in order to simplify barge traffic. This also encouraged the water in the lake to slow down, dropping its sediments. In places, the lake became only a couple feet deep. Starting in the 1990s, a replacement island was built using old barges. Today, you can see this just north of the McCluggage Bridge. It appears to have been named Peoria Island.
