former name[edit]

The article claims that Penarie was formerly known as Homebush, but does not reference that claim or give a date or reason for the name change. It is not clear from the online reference that the town was ever known as Homebush, just that the name of the hotel was Homebush. Any clues? --Scott Davis Talk 10:00, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Whilst I didn't put the original reference to Homebush in the article I do note that this page has the following content ... Rabbits were the source of income for some 20 families based around Penarie/Homebush in the late 1950's and 60's. It was not unusual to water trap hundreds of pairs of rabbits per night in the early 60's. Shooting had taken over from trapping and chillers were located throughout the district. Some 10,000 pairs or more of rabbits were taken in to Homebush per week in the "good" years. In addition the Balranald Shire Council webpage here details the name of the locality as Penarie (Homebush).--VS talk 22:19, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
