Was "Vélez de la Gomera" a person? If so, who was he? --Menchi 5 July 2005 23:53 (UTC)

No, it seems that the name derives from Hades (the name of the old city which was located at the coast) and Gomara, which is the name of this region in the Rif. ----Dukeofalba 05:32, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Dukeofalba[reply]

Length of the world's shortest border ?? The length of the border here would be determined by the width of the isthmus, and not by the length of the isthmus.Eregli bob (talk) 03:31, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

give it back?[edit]

To whom would they give it back? According to the article it was first taken in 1508 from pirates, lost and re-taken in 1564 from the Ottomans. Neither of these still exist. If you are going to start rolling back territorial changes that are centuries old, all of North and South America would have to be given back to the 'original' inhabitants, and Spain would be part of Morrocco, or possibly a province of the Roman Empire!

Thunderstorm?[edit]

In English the sandbank connecting the island to the continent is said to be due to a thunderstorm. In other languages, as well as external sources, it's due to an earthquake. Is there any historical source that can settle it? 178.193.139.170 (talk) 17:21, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
