NFL Draft[edit]

According to the Wikipedia page for the 1976 draft, Haden wasn't selected in the 1st round as mentioned in his bio here. This page (http://www.footballresearch.com/articles/frpage.cfm?topic=2wflalum) says he was drafted in the 7th round by the Rams the year before, when he instead played in the WFL and went to the UK for his Rhodes scholarship. The Wiki page for 1975 draft doesn't go that deep.

I don't remember if WFL players were re-entered into the draft the next year, but I don't think they were. Anyone have definitive info?

Someone left a link to a complete database of draftees. He was drafted by the Rams in 1975 and that was that. I think (although I haven't looked this up) that players who didn't play NFL football for whatever reason after being drafted were stuck with that team indefinitely until released.

Another comment I have is that the cite to the database doesn't give any info about a source for the statement that his draft position was harmed by his decision to accept the Rhodes Scholarship. So, it is pure speculation on our part to say that's why he was drafted low. Frankly, his credentials don't seem to be those of a high draft pick: he was a pretty good but not great college quarterback who managed to last a few years as a pro but who was by no means a star. He was, by the way (for whatever it's worth), vastly less successful as a pro than someone chosen a couple of rounds ahead of him--- Steve Grogan. Grogan, who was an outstanding NFL player, clearly proved that he was drafted much too low--- but did Haden prove that he was drafted too low? This segment does not seem like it's written in the right style for a biography:

"In a Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Harris played poorly in a 20-12 loss, and Rams head coach Chuck Knox was ordered by team owner Carroll Rosenbloom to bench Harris, who is black, in favor of Haden, who is white. This is documented in Knox's autobiography Hard Knox: The Life of an NFL Coach and William Rhoden's Third and a Mile: The Trials and Triumph of the Black Quarterback. At the time of the quarterback change, Harris was the top-rated passer of the National Football Conference. Haden was clearly a beneficiary of the racism facing African American quarterbacks such as Harris of that era.
