Meaning[edit]

Bad example under issues[edit]

The example listed under issues of "the big green fire truck" as a case where the part of speech for fire is ambiguous is a bad example - though a good example of a different reason English is difficult. Almost all linguists would agree that "fire truck" counts as a single noun, regardless of whether it is written as "fire truck", "fire-truck" or "firetruck". The problem here is word detection, not part of speech tagging - this is one of the only cases in English where a noun contains a space. Similarly, in things like "median strip" or "shopping mall" the first words are not adjectives but part of a class of nouns that contain spaces. While this article covers many aspects of POS tagging it does not mention the usage. Would it be proper to include this?
