Buddhism has a Pantheon?[edit]

Why is Buddhism listed? I didn't think it had any gods. It was added by 81.155.97.114 on Dec., 2006. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_in_Buddhism Chuck 18:41, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in Mahayana, Buddha is God. If one god suffices for a pantheon, then maybe... Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 17:38, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge.[edit]

I disagree with the proposed merge with "polytheism". A pantheon is a distinct concept - a group of Gods within the context of a specific culture or fictional setting. Polytheism is really not about fictional sets of Gods (which this article discusses, and could address in much greater depth). Cheers! bd2412 T 06:59, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No gods are fictional to those who believe in them, and all are fictional to those who don't, so that isn't a valid distinction. However, monotheistic religions also have pantheons; after all, that is basically what the saints and angels of Christianity are. There are other monotheistic religions, such as Vodun, where the word 'pantheon' is commonly used. Perhaps, though, that is simply a matter of dealing with unfamiliar religions. kwami (talk) 18:33, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I should also mention that this article was made initially to create a target for the many links to "pantheon" that were previously directed to the disambiguation page on that word. There are "pantheons" of gods which are fictional in the sense that some author made them up for a story, and no one has ever believed in them. This use of the term should not be discussed in an article on the actual practice of polytheism. Also, there is the less formal social sense of the "pantheon of rock gods" and such, addressed in this article, which would also not be appropriate for the polytheism article (some people think "Clapton is God", but nobody thinks Clapton is God. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:41, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gods and christians.

The god is triunite where not every christian agrees to but is stilll concidered monotheistic. Angels are not concidered gods. Humans are concidered sons of gods. The bible speak of council of the gods. If the bible speaks of gods its normaly of statues of wood and stone. Also dont make thou belly they god. The tought that something is god makes it God —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.83.63.160 (talk) 07:41, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fiction?[edit]

I was wondering where the list of Fictional Pantheons would be - meaning created specifically for works of fiction, like fantasy universes, and not any real-world religion (past or present). For instance, the Pantheons for Middle Earth (if there is one), Dragonlance, Star Trek cultures, and so on. If there is such a list on wikipedia (I'm off to hunt for it shortly) would it not make sense to have at least a link to it here?

A few of them can be found in Category:Lists of fictional deities. Cheers! bd2412 T 17:33, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Refocus article?[edit]

This article seems basically an extended dictionary definition + a list. Maybe it should just be List of pantheons? SnowFire (talk) 05:57, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BD2412: This was not an "undiscussed move" as you can see above - just nobody is clearly maintaining this article so nobody else wanted to discuss it. As I stated in my rationale (and on this talk page 11 months ago with no response), the current article is just a WP:DICDEF with a list attached. I think the list is fine to keep, but I don't see the merit in the content, especially since half of it is nonsense out-of-context quotes or other uses of the term. Any reason you think it's better off here? SnowFire (talk) 05:17, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I should add that even if you prefer the current article title, I stand by my edit removing the irrelevant content. Any complaints if I re-remove that? SnowFire (talk) 05:19, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What, exactly, a "pantheon" is in the context of religion (and by extension in the context of the deification of celebrated figures) is very much an encyclopedic topic, and one to which editors seem to be inclined to link frequently. Since these links go to the disambiguation page, Pantheon, and since disambiguation links need to be fixed, there is clearly a need for a target addressing this page in an encyclopedic context. The large number of incoming links, generally addressed to the concept of a pantheon, and not to a list of them, is evidence of this. I have moved the list out. There is plenty of room for expansion in this article, for example the typical distribution of domains in pantheons (sky gods, sea gods, death/underworld gods, etc.), which has basically been codified in fictional versions. The content regarding buildings called pantheons is relevant due to the origin of that name as a description of a building dedicated to the regional pantheon of gods. The content about celebrities is relevant because the evolution of the term is to treat famous people as godlike figures. bd2412 T 05:29, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to be away for a bit, so let me think this over. I will do further research on these points during the week. bd2412 T 05:34, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to research a better article, go ahead! No deadline, etc. (hence waiting 11 months already). I am a bit skeptical that there is an article to write here (at least one that has content that is meaningfully different from polytheism, and shouldn't just go into that article instead), but willing to be proven wrong.
For the "other articles link here" part, traditionally, tons of non-useful links have built up in Wikipedia, and there's no problem in changing such links to Wikitionary links if it came down to it. I wouldn't consider it THAT strong evidence one way or the other. SnowFire (talk) 05:38, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Writing articles that seem impossible to write is my favorite hobby. bd2412 T 22:45, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
