Paco es un diminutivo familiar del nombre Francisco que viene del italiano Francesco.

Los filólogos han descartado que su origen provenga de San Francisco de Asís, el padre de la comunidad o Pater Comunitatis (Padre de la Comunidad, P.C.); tampoco se le otorga mayor credibilidad a la versión de la abreviatura de Phrancisco fuese Phco y que de ahí derive Paco.

Todas las teorías apuntan a un origen hipocorístico -el modo de hablar de los niños- que haría que pronunciasen Francisco como Paquico, Panchico, etc.. La combinación de esta deformación infantil con la existencia del nombre ibero Pacciaecus (origen de Pancho y de Pacheco)parece ser la más fiable.
