A 42 litre V-12 Packard engine from the Second World War would most probably be a Packard 4M-2500 marine engine as used on PT boats and not an aero engine.

The only Packard built V-12 aero engine from the Second World War was the Packard V-1650. This was a re-engineered copy of the British Rolls-Royce Merlin, all versions of which had a capacity of 27 litres, not 42.

It is widely known that the Packard-built Merlins were used in quantity in famous Second World War aircraft like the US-built North American P-51 Mustang as well as various versions of the British-designed Spitfire, Mosquito and Lancaster. This gives rise to a frequent misconception that the Packard V12 engines in the PT boats were also Merlin derivatives. Speculation that the engine in this car was used in a Second World War bomber aircraft probably falls in the same category. Gkaraolides (talk) 09:19, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
