PP CarinaeP Carinae – As seen in a SIMBAD search, the Bayer designation "p Carinae" is used more often to refer to this star than the variable designation "PP Carinae". The same thing is seen in Google Scholar results for both searches. --Relisted. Armbrust The Homunculus 11:01, 1 July 2014 (UTC) Relisted. Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Oppose "p Carinae" and "PP Carinae" are the same star, but "P Carinae" is "V399 Carinae". IIRC either at WT:AST or WT:ASTRO it was determined that Latin-letter Bayer designations should be avoided due to the confusion introduced through them with the lower and upper case forms which on Wikipedia cannot be separated (unlike Wiktionary, Wikipedia does not allow separate lower case and upper case initial letters) "P Carinae" should become a set index page, like how many other Latin Letter Bayer designations are. As we have no problem with ambiguity with "PP Carinae", it should remain here at the Variable Star Desgination instead of moving to the Bayer Designation. -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 05:34, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • However, WP's global policy WP:COMMONNAME trumps our local guideline of WP:NCASTRO. Therefore, per the WP:COMMONNAME policy that article should be at their most common names, this article should be moved to "p Carinae", as it is in more common use than "PP Carinae". The issue of there being a star named "P Carinae" can be solved with a hatnote, as that star is not commonly referred to as "P Carinae". StringTheory11 (t • c) 17:54, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment my personal preference would be the variable star designation as it supplies even more info - by the name we can tell it is varaible and is in Carina. Also avoids ambiguity. I have no idea about preponderance of sources that use each name though....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 05:08, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
