Tips for developing country outlines[edit]

Instructions for developing country outlines is located at Wikipedia:Outlines (while that section is complete, the page is a draft, and will be moved to the Wikipedia namespace when completed). The Transhumanist 21:45, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A note concerning redlinks...[edit]

Many of the entries (and their links) are standard across all of the country outlines, to aid readers, especially young readers, in comparing countries to each other.

So if this country doesn't have any of a particular entry, like navies, please don't delete the entry. Instead, complete it with "none" (and a brief explanation as to why, for example, "- x is a landlocked country with no ports"). If the explanation exists in an article on Wikipedia, then click on the redlink and create a redirect to that location. See Wikipedia:Redirect, WP:Section linking, and Help:Section#Section_linking.

Standard redlinks (article names) were also chosen based on how country coverage tipically expands. This makes the standard names for these subtopics widely available and easily accessible. So please do not remove those redlinks, for they will turn blue eventually. In the meantime, they can be redirected to the section of whatever article has the relevant information, if any. See Wikipedia:Redirect, WP:Section linking, and Help:Section#Section_linking.

Thank you.

Guidelines for outlines[edit]

Guidelines for the development of outlines are being drafted at Wikipedia:Outlines.

Your input and feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Please check and fix the government section[edit]

The government section needs to be checked for accuracy. The initial data placed in the government branches sections was generated by template, and the data didn't fit all countries.

So those sections need to be looked over, and fixed if needed.

Please help.

Thank you.

Merger proposal[edit]

Suggest deleting the article Outline of Northern Cyprus and merging the content to Northern Cyprus, Outline of Cyprus and Outline of Turkey since a separate article seems unnecessary. There is unnecessary duplication of content and significant overlap  Nipsonanomhmata  (Talk) 17:28, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, I think the outline is fundamentally different in structure to the article, so it doesn't really overlap and offers a valuable alternative perspective (god, I sound like an art critic...) - HIGHFIELDS (TALKCONTRIBUTIONS) 20:17, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose An outline is fundamentally different in purpose. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 00:05, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose, per Highfields and Chipmunkdavis. And what does outline of Turkey have to do with this anyway? Keep, since it is a sovereign state and has some geography, politics and control over an area to outline, just like Somaliland. --Seksen iki yüz kırk beş (talk) 20:56, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: North Cyprus is independent, (partially) recognized and sovereign country. Every people in the world (including the president of (Greek) Cyprus,Christofias) shows his passport to enter North Cyprus. There is only NC flag in North Cyprus. In North Cyprus' sea, no any other can drill sea for oil in Exclusive Economic Zone of NC. .... I strongly oppose. Reem chi kanoo (talk) 18:58, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. The scope of this outline is the same as for Northern Cyprus, but the format is not. "Outline", short for "hierarchical outline", is a specialized tree structure presentation format. One of its purposes is to display a subject taxonomically to reveal the familial (parent-child) relationships between its subtopics. In other words, it shows more clearly than a prose article what belongs to what, which is a useful learning tool. There are two main types of outlines: sentence and topic. This one is a topic outline, meaning it is composed of topics rather than sentences. As such, and due to the fact that its topics are also article links, it is a very useful navigation aid. An outline on Wikipedia, in addition to presenting the structure of its subject, doubles as a table of contents for Wikipedia's coverage of that subject. Outlines are typically more comprehensive in this regard than regular (prose) articles. Together, the set of outlines on Wikipedia form an interlinked network which serves as an outline of the entire body of human knowledge. That set is one of the navigation subsystems in Wikipedia's overall contents navigation system which is accessible from the second link of Wikipedia's Main Menu located in the Side Bar that is displayed on every page of Wikipedia. There is an outline on almost every autonomous political division (country) in the world. Deleting the Outline of Northern Cyprus would leave an obvious gaping hole in the set. Please leave this important outline article intact. It will grow, improve, and refine over time. Northern Cyprus is a distinct political entity which warrants its own outline, independent of the outlines of the countries which may lay claim to it. Thank you. (See also the Outline of geography). Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines[edit]

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia. The hierarchy is maintained through the use of heading levels and indented bullets. See Wikipedia:Outlines for a more in-depth explanation. The Transhumanist 23:58, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
