Role of Jago in Rossini's Otello[edit]

Weinstock (1987, p. 497) says the following about the premiere cast of Rossini's Otello: "The first libretto shows Ciccimarra as Jago, but its creation often is credited to Manuel Garcia. An undated Ricordi edition of Otello in the present writer's possession (plate no. 43971) assigns Jago to Garcia, "Un Gondoliere" to Ciccimarra (perhaps reflecting the 1817 San Carlo cast), and lists no singers for Emilia, the Doge, and Lucio." Thus he lists Ciccimarra as having sung Jago at the premiere in Naples. Is there a more recent reference which deals with this question more definitively? (I'm also leaving this discussion on the Manuel Garcia talk page.)--Robert.Allen (talk) 01:13, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

James Radomski in Grove Opera says "Towards the end of 1816, García and his wife returned to Paris to sing at the Théâtre Italien. Paolino in Il matrimonio segreto was the role of [his] rentrée on 16 October. Il califfo di Bagdad had its Paris premiere on 22 May 1817 at the Théâtre Italien. It was performed regularly until García and his wife left the company after a contretemps with the director, Mme Catalani ...[after] a performance of Portugale's La morte di Semiramide on 20 September 1817."
This seems to me to imply that García was in Paris from before 16 October 1816 until well into 1817. --GuillaumeTell 02:12, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that certainly seems to support Weinstock's conclusion. It sure seems unlikely he could have prepared a new role for Naples by 4 December. --Robert.Allen (talk) 09:58, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Subtitle[edit]

Didn't this opera have the subtitle Il Moro di Venezia? If so, shouldn't the article include the subtitle? Robert K S (talk) 15:31, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The librettist[edit]

What is the librettist's name? "Francesco... di Salsi" or "Francesco... di Salsa"? As I checked out his name on some other Wikis, the last name is not alike! — Hamid Hassani (talk) 09:26, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • According to Richard Osborne in his Master Musicians book, his name was 'Francesco Maria Berio di Salsa', referenced by him as 'Berio'.Cg2p0B0u8m (talk) 15:37, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
