Birth issue[edit]

If there are Cuban records showing he was born in 1965, why is the October 1969 birth for him persist. They changed the date when the Furcal issue came but not El Duque's

To my knowledge, only one document (his divorce decree), show's him born in 1965. All the U.S. sources list it as 1969. I don't think it's reasonable for
Wikipedia to assert he was born in '65. The controversy is mentioned, later in the article, though.
I'm seeing more and more sources showing the birth year as '65 Ucanlookitup 13:59, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What sources claim he was born between 1957 and 1961 and what proof do they have to support their claim? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.196.192.8 (talk) 17:32, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cuban American category[edit]

I've reverted the addition of the Cuban American category because I believe that Hernandez is a legal alien here, not an American. Does anyone have evidence to the contrary? —Cleared as filed. 01:38, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the so called wet foot, dry foot policy says that any Cuban who makes it to US soil is granted refugee status. If a Cuban were to be picked up while sailing from Cuba, she would be returned to Cuba, but if she can make to the US, she is legally here. Cazador 13:50, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

"If a Cuban were to be picked up while sailing from Cuba, she would be returned to Cuba": That is in fact what happened, but this process was stopped by some sort of back-channel string-pulling. See the below "Cuban-American category/description of immigration to the United States" section. Sutton16 13:57, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cuban American category/description of immigration to U.S.[edit]

I served on the Miami-based Coast Guard cutter Baranof 1997-1999. Hernandez's attempted immigration to Florida via sailboat was stopped by a Key West-based cutter, and Hernandez and his traveling companions were transferred to the Baranof for repatriation to Cuba via the Bahamas (i.e., he would be turned in to Bahamian authorities and flown to Cuba, a not uncommon repatriation mode at that point, not sure if it still is). After a dangerously stormy night at sea just off Cat Cay (we were forbidden to return to Miami because it is the CG's policy to prevent "dry foot" status with Cuban migrants whenever possible) we were cleared to bring him and his traveling companions into Freetown on Grand Bahamas Island. Hernandenz and his companions spent the night vomiting into plastic trash bags in the main passageway of the ship, clad in swim trunks. We transferred the group to Bahamian authorities the next day and returned to Miami. It was not until a day or so later that I read of Hernandez's sudden change in status and offer of admission to the U.S. (and only then did I learn of his identity/significance). As far as I knew until reading that news, he had returned to Cuba later that day. Sutton16 14:35, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orlando Hernández Pedrosa?[edit]

May I ask you why you have reverted my edits: Javier Sotomayor and Orlando Hernández? What do you think is wrong? Doma-w 17:51, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doma-w, I recognize that Orlando Hernández Pedrosa may well be his birth name . His divorce decree (per smoking gun) seems to indicate that. I'm also aware that his mother's name was Pedrosa. To simply change his name, though, without providing a context or citing sources is confusing. Are you saying that his current legal name is Pedrosa? I don't think that's accurate. If you want to add his birthname and cite appropriate sources - I have no problem with that. Authoritative sources that I can find, though, list him as Orlando Hernández.Ucanlookitup 11:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer. First of all I do not understand why you have revert my complete edit, when you have only a problem with the name? For me there are enough sources to add the name. Sorrily I have no idea if this is only his birthname and not his current name. If you are sure, that birthname and current name differs, maybe you can change it into Orlando Hernández, née Hernández Pedroso? Is this an appropriate solution for you? Thank you and :) Doma-w 09:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He is very well known in the U.S. as Orlando Hernández, but few would recognize him as Orlando Hernández Pedrosa. I guess I would like to understand a few things.

  • What's the authoritative source for birth name?
  • Why is it important to list it that way as opposed to in a discussion of his history? Is there a point about him you're trying to make?. His mother's name is Pedrosa, but he is the son of Arnaldo Hernandez - a famous baseball player in Cuba and from whom he takes his nickname. He is also the half-brother of Liván Hernández - another baseball player. These associations seem more relevant. Ucanlookitup 11:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Teams[edit]

Orlando Hernández was a member of both the Chicago White Sox and Montreal Expos in 2003 following the deal involving Bartolo Colón. Shouldnt that be mentioned? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.141.47.21 (talk) 04:33, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

nickname[edit]

Hi, is there a citation for this spelling El Duque - there was a report at the BLPN recently claiming it should be El Duke... ? Off2riorob (talk) 12:14, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
