Identification Onela = Áli[edit]

Onela is a character in Beowulf. Equating him with Áli in the Nordic sagas on a different isle several centuries later, is not entirely without problems, as for example the thesis by Carl Edlund Anderson points out. So I will revert User:Berig's deletion of my contribution. He deleted the comment although a detailed reference was given. /Pieter Kuiper 14:25, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I fail to understand why you *again* want to misrepresent poor Carl Edlund Anderson. The scholar you refer to agrees with the identification by stating: [...] the battle between Aðils and Áli on the ice of lake Vænir, which is echoed in Eadgils's and Onela's conflict in Beowulf. Such elements most likely represent native Scandinavian traditions[1].--Berig 17:31, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Anderson points out a problem. He is probably not the only scholar who pointed this out. This is a problem in the identification, which Anderson recognizes by using words like "is echoed". These are reverberations over centuries. I do not understand why you insist on suppressing anything that might question the identification Onela=Áli. /Pieter Kuiper 17:41, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allegations again? An admin has already commented that you should try to be reasonable[2] and that your behaviour borders on disruption[3].--Berig 17:52, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

I will revert the etymology to what is actually written in the source. I had provided a detailed reference. The link in the older version that User:Berig reverted to is actually dead. Berig should not delete contributions by others as a spinal reflex - WP:OWN. He should welcome participation by others. /Pieter Kuiper 14:25, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As for the deletions of your contributions, see the administrator User:Dbachmann's comments about your behaviour at Talk:Eadgils. I will verify your reference in due time.--Berig 17:23, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At Talk:Eadgils, dab had suggested taking this to the Onela article. /Pieter Kuiper 17:37, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and he asked you to be reasonable[4] and commented that your behaviour borders on disruption[5]. I have tried to move you contribution to a subsection where it is more relevant.--Berig 17:39, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good move. /Pieter Kuiper 17:46, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.--Berig 17:50, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uppland?[edit]

I don't know enough about old Norse to be able to determine this myself, but why is "hinn Upplenzki" tranlsated as "from Uppland" and not "from Oppland"? The latter would seem more logical considering Ale was a Norwegian king, and it is also how his name is rendered in the latest Swedish translation of Heimskringla.
