Band/Group

Okay so it says on the page that one direction are a 'boy band' but technically they are not, they do not play instruments and or have one lead singer, they are therefore a group and would like this to be changed as it is quite annoying that people are conusing them as a band and comparing them to other bands when in fact they should be compared to boy groups. thank you.--Beckii lovato (talk) 19:29, 30 November 2012 (UTC)--Beckii lovato (talk) 19:29, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

I see it says on the page that they are a 'boy band' but infact they are not, they do not have a lead singer nor do they play instruments, therefore i ask that you change this as it causes many arguments with people comparing them to bands such as 'The all american rejects' and 'The killers' when in fact they should be compared to GROUPS such as 'westlife' and 'The Wanted' Thank you.

A boy band is different to a normal band where there is one lead singer and other people playing instruments. In a boy band everyone sings. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hiitsluce (talkcontribs) 17:09, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

  • The article on boy band explains this. The bands you cited are not termed as boy bands for a reason. —AdabowtheSecond 22:47, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Nationality

OK, this massive debate on whether One Direction should be called British, British-Irish, English or English-Irish has to stop. We need to look at (the lack of) consistency here. Look at Girls Aloud's page (English-Irish), The Saturdays (English/Irish), The Wanted (British) and One Direction (goodness knows, it's changing all the time.). All four are five-piece bands with four English members and one Irish member. [1] [2] [3] [4] If you want my opinion, all of them should be English-Irish. None of the members of Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, The Wanted or One Direction are Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish, so despite what numerous sources say, "British" is not accurate enough, nor is "British-Irish" or "English". Unreal7 (talk) 12:26, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

The country is the UK; the official nationality is "British". English-Scottish-Welsh-Northern Irish? are not official nationalities; people from Wales, Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland when you open their passport it says "British". So to conclude I support British-Irish which is completely accurate based on One Direction members' actual nationalities. —AdabowtheSecond 19:14, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Good luck with that. FWIW, I agree, but that's not the way it's done on Wikipedia. Try changing Robert Burns's nationality to British... Jon C. 19:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
I also want to note that classing them just as "British" or "English" rather than "British-Irish", will cause never ending discussions and page breaches by fans of 1D who love that one Irish member. As of now this is the only 1D article out of the 18 1D articles on Wikipedia, which denotes them as British. I am not ready to endlessly revert 1D fans on 18 articles constantly. I know WP:Consensus is almighty on Wikipedia but I for one will not be reverting endlessly. As a result their will be inconsistency on their articles, which leaves readers confused and make them feel that Wikipedia is untrustworthy. —AdabowtheSecond 19:39, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
"that's not the way it's done on Wikipedia", give/show me a guideline? Isn't Wikipedia supposed to denote the actual/factual truth. —AdabowtheSecond 19:44, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are official nationalities by the way, passport's irrelevant. But if you think otherwise then keep consistency and do the same with Girls Aloud, The Saturdays and The Wanted. Unreal7 (talk) 22:56, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
There's no guideline, that's just the way it is. Count the instances of English, Scottish, Welsh and (Northern) Irish to British. That said, I'm going to unwatch this because I really can't be arsed. Jon C. 09:28, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

ONLY OUR BRITISH NATIONALITY is defined in law....Scottish, English etc do NOT exist in law....NOT official nationalities, as such, even though IMPORTANT to us.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.27.39.41 (talk) 22:23, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Jon C.:If there is no guideline, we don't have to follow a recurring trend. —AdabowtheSecond 20:45, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
  • Unreal7: the last thing I want to do is spread myself thinly, I do not concern myself with the articles of Girls Aloud, The Saturdays and The Wanted. You may do as you wish.

So may I change it to British-Irish or English-Irish to keep consistency based on the notes I have written. AdabowtheSecond 20:45, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

English-Irish, that's how the guys themselves identify it. 23:39, 1 November 2012‎ (UTC)
If they identify themselves that way, we should use that (that's why we call Leona Lewis British, not English). Do you have a reliable source to show that's how they describe themselves? –anemoneprojectors– 18:20, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I have once heard Malik say they are a "English-Irish band" it was YouTube video. Have no idea how to find it and even if WP:YOUTUBE however its the thought that counts. —AdabowtheSecond 18:35, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
We do have reliable sources to say they are British - just see all the "Best British [whatever]" awards they've been nominated for on List of awards and nominations received by One Direction. –anemoneprojectors– 18:42, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
We do, so I say British-Irish is perfectly fine. —AdabowtheSecond 18:57, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Why is "British-Irish" fine when reliable sources call then "British"? –anemoneprojectors– 17:45, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Have you not read my notes on the problem of inconsistency if we solely describe them as British. I'm supporting what you acknowledged in the vein of English vs. British. —AdabowtheSecond 01:44, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Inconsistency is a weak reason. We can easily change all the other articles to British. Just saying. I think we should request for comments.--Krystaleen 02:44, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Of course we can easily change all other 17 articles its two words, endlessly reverting 1D fans is not easy, only two out of 18 1D articles are semi protected; One Direction & Take Me Home (One Direction album); the latter expires in a couple of days. —AdabowtheSecond 03:02, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
A RFC wouldn't help because most of the editors will be not be there to revert 1D fans on 18 articles. —AdabowtheSecond 03:47, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Actually that's another weak reason. If there are disruptive editing you can request for the articles to be locked.--Krystaleen 12:30, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Why go trough all the hassle and make it more difficult, I'm getting tired of this, I support British-Irish and will not be reverting on 18 articles or asking protection because it will never end and certainly when its 18 articles. —AdabowtheSecond 12:02, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
That's still a weak reason to change this article. I'll even add the pages to my watchlist if you think it's going to be endless reverting. –anemoneprojectors– 17:49, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
So consensus decides British, Anemone sure could use all the reverts possible. —AdabowtheSecond 16:50, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Here Anemone;

Thanks, I've got them all on my watchlist as of a few days ago. They do seem to get vandalised quite a lot! Hopefully we can keep up with this if it's changed a lot. Right now I'm not around much in the evenings... –anemoneprojectors– 18:29, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
So they're British? All right then. But here's the "English-Irish" source I mentioned before. [5] Unreal7 (talk) 23:26, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
That makes it clear that they identify themselves as an English-Irish boy band, so I'm happy to go with that now. Thanks. But I wasn't saying they are all British, I was saying the band are British and the members are English and Irish. But we can go with how they self-identify. Until you provided this video, the best source was awards for "Best British Whatever". –anemoneprojectors– 10:28, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Anemone could use all the extra eyes. So its English-Irish now :O, which I agree with if that's not clear lol. —AdabowtheSecond 13:55, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Nice to finally see a conclusion of this rather long discussion lol--Krystaleen 15:37, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
I think we just need other people to agree... –anemoneprojectors– 17:18, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
.... just changed all 16 articles to English-Irish, with a message. —AdabowtheSecond 17:38, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
English-Irish is not compatible - English is not a sovereign state (such as British), unlike Irish which is the term for people from the Republic of Ireland, which itself is a true sovereign state. To say English does not represent their true nationality, which would be British, being they are British citizens (excluding Horan) 31.221.49.179 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 04:54, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I understand your notion although as of right now, consensus decides English. I suggest getting more people to concur. —AdabowtheSecond 04:59, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Might I suggest "Anglo-Irish" - "Anglo" being a) the more formal word to use when combining two nationalities and b) having the useful ambiguity of referring to either "English" or "British" (per the OED) even if it literally means just the former. Another elegant phrase might be "band from the British Isles". At risk of endless edit wars, you could just take the view that even though one of them has an Irish passport, the band is simply "British" on the grounds that the majority of them are from the UK, they were formed on a UK TV show, they are based in London and I assume that the band as a corporate entity is headquartered in the UK (no doubt with offshore companies involved, but essentially run from London). After all, you don't say that Manchester Utd is a Spanish-Brazilian-Ecuadorian-Danish-British football team, or that The Wire was an Anglo-American TV show, even though that more accurately reflects the nationality of a proportion of the people involved.Le Deluge (talk) 03:39, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Exactly. That's why I first proposed that it should be just British. But someone pointed out that the group themselves identify as English-Irish so that's why the consensus was to use English-Irish.--Krystaleen 12:15, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

I recognise the importance of how those involved describe themselves - it's just a question of translating "English-Irish" into a form that grown-ups would use. "Anglo-Irish" is just a more encyclopaedic version of the same thing.Le Deluge (talk) 14:04, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
I know, and I agree with you, but it's been discussed before.--Krystaleen 15:38, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Harry Styles is currently dating fellow bandmate, Louis Tomlinson. [1] Stylinsonmoans (talk) 04:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Not done for now: I'm not convinced that this isn't more than a rumour at the moment, once there is definite coverage in reliable sources this can be reconsidered. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 09:02, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

This is not true as both Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have denied it and got very upset about the accusations as Louis Tomlinson has a girlfriend, Eleanor Calder and there have been rumours about Harry Styles and Taylor Swift which have been confirmed by a number of people. So, this is definately not true, it's just something that some fans make up as Harry and Louis are very close friends. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hiitsluce (talkcontribs) 17:13, 16 December 2012 (UTC) Larry Stylington is false. Louie and Harry are best mates and do not have such feelings for each other...Louie is in a relationship with Eleanor Calder and Harry with Taylor Swift. It has been confirmed so many times but people think they are truly in love. Wikiproject banners

I'll say this from the start - personally I'd eliminate all geo-Project tags from biographies, and handle it by regional taskforces of WPBIO. The purpose of tagging with Projects is not as some form of category system, but as a way of identifying priorities for the Project. In the case of most biographies, another project is better off taking the lead, rather than a geographical one. Even in cases like the Pogues or Beatles, where their Irish/Scouseness is fundamental to their identity as a band and they have in turn are a significant part of the culture of their home cities, I'm not sure that WP:IRELAND or WP:MERSEYSIDE necessarily have too much to say that wouldn't be more of a priority for one of the music projects. Based on that, I really don't think 1D's relationship with say Cheshire makes it worth the Cheshire project wasting any time on the 1D article. Have 1D even played in Cheshire for instance? (maybe, as part of the X-factor final "homecoming" gigs, but I doubt it's much more than that).
The anchor in this link says it all - WP:WikiProject_Council/Guide#Overtagging_is_disruptive "WikiProject banners should not be used to duplicate the category system or portals. If an article is only tangentially related to the scope of another WikiProject, then please do not place that project's banner on the article....It is more friendly to omit outside WikiProjects that you think will rate the article as low importance relative to their specific field."
In this case WP Biography / Musicians and WP Music of the United Kingdom are overwhelmingly the "lead" projects and I'd delete all the county project banners. PS I'd have said Holmes Chapel was more like a small town than a "village" - anywhere big enough to support a secondary school is getting a bit big for a village. I know this is a "good article", but I seriously question whether "are an English-Irish pop boy band" is appropriate. Two members of U2 were born in England; that doesn't make it an Irish-English band.

I believe "is a British pop group" or "is a London-based British pop group, comprised of four English and one Irish vocalists", is far more representative and appropriate. Quis separabit? 22:51, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

A WP:Consensus took place weeks ago on the topic with as a result; English-Irish. So for it to be changed you need to build a consensus favoring your termination of the group. — Robin (talk) 00:19, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, the reason we decided to call them an English-Irish group is because they call themselves and English-Irish group, so I believe we can go with how they identify themselves. –anemoneprojectors– 09:36, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Members

I'm unaware of Wikipedia policy on listing ages of personalities. It seems illogical to put an age after anyone's birth date, since it changes every year. I see that it's common across Wikipedia, but to put an actual age means the page (such as One Direction's) quickly becomes outdated, unless someone goes in and updates the ages every time someone has a birthday.

What is acceptable and what is preferred? JohnAKeith (talk) 17:45, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

The ages are updated by a generic template. This is Zayn Malik's template for example {{Birth date and age|1993|1|12|df=yes}}. At 24:00 UTC, it changes a person's age automatically if it's the person's birthday. — Robin (talk) 18:16, 1 January 2013 (UTC):)

Provide exactly what you want changed, and someone may do it for you. Otherwise, once your account ages sufficiently, you will be able to do it yourself. Why? Article is about One Direction not their individual relationships. — Robin (talk) 22:50, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Maybe we could just add information about their current relationships, the article is about them. CPGirlAJ (talk) 19:51, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
The members section is already a bit bloated; adding their relationships is not an improvement toward the article as a whole in my opinion. — Robin (talk) 22:30, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

The section on One Direction's tours still attempts to link to One Direction 2013 World Tour, which now redirects to Take Me Home Tour (One Direction). Photos

I don't mind photos being in the article but I can't help but feel that User:Jean-Jacques Georges is trying to get his own photos on here where people will see them (i.e. promote himself and his work), consdering the fact that I have objected to them and he has restored them several times. Images in this article should alternate left-right aligned - having four images together breaks this. I think there are enough photos without them - if people want to see more images, they can go to Commons via the link at the bottom. Just because you took a photo that you think is great doesn't mean it should go on Wikipedia. The photo of Liam is unflattering, while Horan and Tomlinson are looking away - and why only three individual member photos? The list of members shows the members individually, while the article about the band has photos of the band. A photo of the entire band from 2013 would be better in the "This Is Us and Midnight Memories" section. –anemoneprojectors– 17:13, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Oh dear. For your information, I did upload these photos, but I did not take them myself. The author is just some guy who permits me to use his work on commons. Actually, I found the photo of Liam relatively flattering, and I thought the images made the article easier to read. Sorry you don't feel that way. There's no need to make any noise about it : I don't mind that much. Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 20:22, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

It is unfair on other musicians like The Monkees because the One Direction wiki page has clearly been written by fans. For example, the wiki page states that One Direction were the first band to reach number in the US billboard charts with three albums. The reference ignores the fact that the Monkees have already achieved this. This should be corrected to "first band since 1967". British or English-Irish?

How about defining the band as simply "British" in the lead instead of "English-Irish"? We don't include multiple nationalities in the lead sentence as per WP:MOS. Kailash29792 (talk) 08:48, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

I have know defined the band as British, because England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all part of the United Kingdom. Kailash29792 (talk) 07:15, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
This change is illogical. Four of the members are British, one is Irish. The change is inaccurate and should be reversed. Your reasoning about the constituent countries of the UK is irrelevant. 23:06, 28 November 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.41.39.111 (talk)
The band itself, the actual band, not the members, are British no? They were formed in London. U2 if I remember correctly also has one British member, what are they defined as in their article? I might go check.--Krystaleen 01:51, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
I assume you are referring to either Adam Clayton or The Edge both of whom were born in Britain. The difference here is that both are considered Irish despite the places of their birth, I can refer you to their own articles and accompanying discussions. This, however, is not the case with Niall Horan. Even were this not true, the notion that a band's "nationality" is different to that of its members based on where it was formed is illogical. If they had met and formed on holiday in Spain, I doubt you would consider them Spanish. 82.141.233.161 (talk) 12:32, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
I think a band's mutual nationality should not be affected by the presence of a single foreign body in them (do we see Linkin Park as an Asian band because of Mike Shinoda, Metallica as Danish because of co-founder Lars Ulrich, Green Day as German because of Tre Cool, or Queen as Indian because of Freddie Mercury?) Kailash29792 (talk) 10:44, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
It should, in order to reflect the actual state of affairs. Also, many of the examples you give are flawed, Tre Cool is not considered German but American, Freddie Mercury is not considered Indian but British, you can check their pages. The most accurate way to describe One Direction is as an English-Irish band (or British-Irish) as it formerly was before this backwards edit which only serves to confuse, and is simply mistaken insofar as they are not all British. Furthermore, the reason given for the change above is invalid ("I have know defined the band as British, because England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all part of the United Kingdom") due to it being irrelevant. Four of the members are from one of those constituent countries while one is from none of them. (86.41.39.111 (talk) 14:17, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Actually Niall Horan isn't even from Northern Ireland, he's from the Republic of Ireland, a different country, therefore I consider British-Irish (or English-Irish) is the correct definition. MaxiiTorres108 (talk) 21:19, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Can someone change this back please? The band referred to themselves as a Britsh and Irish band recently on the Graham Norton Show, unprompted. I think British is good, as they were formed in London and live in London. The band is British, even if one member is not. How about British-Irish though? 220.239.113.238 (talk) 20:22, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
British-Irish or English-Irish are both satisfactory. British standalone is not. 86.41.46.253 (talk) 00:17, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

One Direction Fandom

The One Direction Fandom or more commonly known as 'Directioners', are to this time and date in history are the best fandom out there and there is no way that anyone is permitted to argue with this statement. Fans who suggest that they are fans because they speak the language of the 'carrot' are labelled as 'directionators'. These are better to be avoided at all times if you do not want to incur brain damage. You have been warned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8085:6000:5E80:E495:ACC1:FCBB:62D3 (talk) 20:46, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Edit Request

Can someone remove the "official website" (http://www.onedirection.com Official Website) link from the infobox. It's not their website, and it clearly says it's a fansite when you go there. --65.128.130.213 (talk) 06:56, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Someone has done this now. I'm mentioning it in case others see this request and attempt to fix it, as I just did, finding out it was already done. –anemoneprojectors– 13:24, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

"English-Irish", revisited

I am aware that this was previously discussed and that consensus at the time was to refer to the act as English-Irish (or British-Irish) due to one member being Irish. However, Wikipedia operates on verifiability. One Direction are overwhelmingly referred to in sources as a British band, per Google hits:

75% of the band's members (and 80%, prior to Malik's departure) are English, and thus more generally British. The band was formed in England. And on top of that, they are nearly always referred to as British by the media. I think this should be reevaluated. Chase (talk | contributions) 19:17, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

I remember at the time saying that we should term them how they chose to term themselves, which was either English-Irish or British-Irish (can't remember which, but I remember one of the band saying it in a video), but the argument to call them British is pretty strong. –anemoneprojectors– 15:45, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Who put the band together

The article currently states that both Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger have claimed to have come up with the idea of forming the band. I'm currently watching Channel 5's 20 Moments That Rocked Talent Shows, which aired on 17 July 2015 in the UK, and Sinitta has stated that Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger jointly came up with the idea to put a group together and selected the members, but Simon Cowell got the credit because The X Factor is his show. Not sure if that helps. If anyone's interested in watching, it's from about 47m 40s, here. –anemoneprojectors– 15:50, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Teen Choice Awards 2015

At the Teen Choice Awards One direction didn't win in all categories where they were nominated any more. On the 16th of August 2015, they didn't win in the category "International Artist" and "Choice Fandom" where Super Junior won [1].

Split

The wording for One Direction's "split" on the current page should be corrected to "hiatus" and should probably include "rumored", as no official press statement from the band has been released yet and all current tabloid coverage only talks of a hiatus, not a split. http://www.people.com/article/one-direction-taking-year-long-hiatus

Also, would somebody mind updating the awards and nominations tab to more current information? For example, the band have five AMAs now, not two. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.201.25.208 (talk) 06:25, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Activity to end 2016?

It keeps getting added, unsourced, that they will no longer be active as of 2016. WP:Ball applies, and a source is needed for the info to be included in any format. Removning again. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 15:07, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Edit request - Add "Main article: List of One Direction members (w/link)" under "Band members" heading

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

And possibly remove the links on Niall's and Liam's names, both in that section and throughout the article, since they don't (yet) have articles of their own, so both their links just redirect to the "List of One Direction members" page anyway? It seems like these changes would make things clearer and cleaner. Infiniteparentheses (talk) 15:11, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Never mind; figured both of these out myself. I added in the main article link, since my account is now old enough. I'm leaving the name links alone because it seems like this is standard Wikipedia formatting. Guess I should have been a little more patient, huh? :P Infiniteparentheses (talk) 04:23, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

@5 albert square and Joyceem955: He's left the management team, but does that really mean he's left the band? We know One Direction are going on hiatus, so doesn't it make sense that he would find a solo management deal for that time? AnemoneProjectors 14:08, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
