Old Monroe County Courthouse → Monroe County Courthouse (Old Monroe County Courthouse, Monroeville, Alabama) – This building, long ago listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Old Monroe County Courthouse", has just been designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark under name "Monroe County Courthouse". It has been practice (good practice IMO) that NRHP articles get renamed to higher level NHL name, when an NHL designation occurs. The old name was not particularly descriptive/unique/good, as there exist multiple old/former courthouse buildings once or still known as "Monroe County Courthouse" (including eight listed at Monroe County Courthouse (disambiguation)) relating to the 17(!) Monroe Counties (see Monroe County (disambiguation)). This move request has been mentioned at wt:NRHP. Other suggestions possible, but I think including the whole historical official NRHP name and also the city and state within the disambuation works well here. The proposed name seems rather unwieldy. And I don't think it's common practice to include an alternative name in the title. If it's the only Monroe County Courthouse in Alabama, why not just Monroe County Courthouse (Alabama)? The other "Monroe County Courthouse" articles follow that naming scheme. --Un assiolo (talk) 19:32, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking for a better name, now that this is to be more prominent as a National Historic Landmark, not a name suggesting it is the current courthouse building. It seems to me (though I admit right now I am not finding it 100% absolutely clear) that the current name for current courthouse of the county is "Monroe County Courthouse". For example, Open Street Map view shows "Old Monroe County Courthouse" applying to the old/historic courthouse building, and "Monroe County Courthouse" applying to newer building just to its north.

Anyhow, the article, the NHL, is about the old/historic courthouse building, which served from 1903 to 1967, and is not the "only" Monroe County Courthouse; it is different than preceding one(s) and successor(s) in Monroeville. Article is clear this building is a museum. Google maps suggests it is called "Old Courthouse Museum". The museum webpage gives 31 N. Alabama address (and shows its space being used for a quilting exhibit, etc.). NRHP states the "new courthouse was completed in 1967", I think that is meaning the 1960s-style building also on the Courthouse Square, which I can see in Google Streetview (but I can't see signage on it). From its webpage, the Monroe County Circuit Clerk's office is at 65 N. Alabama; I think that is the 1960s building (and yes, Google maps confirms those two addresses are the two separate buildings, 31 to the south, 65 to the north). Confusingly, this current Alabama courts page gives 65 N. Alabama address but shows photo of old/historic courthouse actually at 31. [Also, shown in Google maps and other sources, there is a completely different, modern "Monroeville Municipal Court", a block or two to the south.] --Doncram (talk) 20:14, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
