The result of the move request was: plain name as disambig page. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 06:03, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nyctimene (genus)Nyctimene — This bat genus, Nyctimene, was named after a minor character from Ovid, Nyctimene. However, the bat is now far more widely discussed in reliable sources; when one types in "Nyctimene" in Google Scholar, Google Books, or even JSTOR, the vast majority of hits relate to the bat, not the character. Therefore, it is now the primary topic. Ucucha 15:47, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Comment given also 2150 Nyctimene, I think a disambiguation page should occupy Nyctimene. 69.3.72.9 (talk) 16:21, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks for that find. I'd be fine with a dab page (in that case, Category:Nyctimene should be moved and I would prefer for the article on the bat to be Nyctimene (bat)), but I'm not sure your find means the bat is not the primary topic; I think our determination of the primary topic should be based largely on usage in reliable sources, and I didn't see the asteroid at all in my searches. Ucucha 16:34, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • It seems to me all three of the current candidates are obscure, and none is a primary topic. 69.3.72.9 (talk) 16:46, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • But there are degrees even in obscurity; the bat genus is mentioned tens if not hundreds of times in reliable sources, while there are much fewer mentions of both the mythological figure and the asteroid. Ucucha 16:52, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Many if not most of the mentions are of one of the species in this genus, not of the genus itself. 69.3.72.9 (talk) 17:16, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I do think it is relevant. I support moving the article about the mythical Nyctimene to Nyctimene (mythology). However, in Category:Bat genera more bat genera are disambiguated with "(genus)" than with "(bat)". Also, "(genus)" is less ambiguous than "(bat)", "(dog)", "(cat)"; etc. The latter terms are used to refer to individual animals. Using "(dog)" etc to mean a dog breed rather than an individual dog can create confusion. If necessary, "(bat genus)" would be okay. 69.3.72.9 (talk) 18:42, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've renamed a few recently, with the reasoning that labeling it a "bat" would be more helpful to someone unfamiliar with the subject than using the jargon term "genus". I would also be fine with "(bat genus)". Ucucha 18:57, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate per findings, though, would every character by Ovid be mythological, or just fictional/fictionalized? 76.66.197.151 (talk) 00:55, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate Nyctimene; there is no clear primary topic. TJRC (talk) 18:46, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
