"there was fear expressed that someone could purport to be a member of the opposite sex in order to trap someone in a marriage." Sorry but I don't know what this sentence means. Well can we have a reference then? The encyclopaedia shouldn't have to rely on a user just stating something is true. The piece of legislation and the debate surrounding it, as described in the present version of the article, seem quite bizarre, and while it does seem just about plausible that this was the level of the debate, everything should be well-sourced. Oddly, I can't find this act in the Statute Law Database or on the Office of Public Sector Information site. Is this because it's since been repealed? Someone had better add some sources to prove this law ever even existed! Rovaniemi-5 (talk) 14:24, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This Act did exist: here is a link which shows it being repealed by the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 as claimed in the text. On the other hand, this page needs updating now that Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 has been passed. MrStoofer (talk) 16:29, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
