Inappropriate tone[edit]

Especially in the history section. First-person writing, such as "I think ...", and use of exclamation marks and offhand casual phrases, such as "that's another story!" do not lend the tone that is expected of an encyclopedia. Chris the speller (talk) 03:03, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cleaned this up somewhat. I leave it to others to decide whether to remove the tag. Jameslwoodward (talk) 14:38, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In 1842 France took possession of the whole group and established a settlement that was abandoned in 1859.[3][6]

There is no source for the abandonment in 1859 in this book nor in reference 3. It's also a pretty shit reference anyway cause it barely mentions it

"As for the Marquesas, the State Department simply ignored Porter’s attempt to annex them—not surprisingly, for the news of this first overseas conquest arrived while the British were burning Washington. In 1842, when France added the islands to her empire (wherein they remain today, as part of French Polynesia), Washington did not object. The U.S. would not have a Pacific island of its own until the acquisition of Midway twenty-five years later."

Prior to that it is discussing the 1813 war
