Don't Merge - The Birmingham SF Group was formed in 1971, but did not take over Novacon until 1972. There is a possiblity it may become an independent convention in the future. These entries should remain separate. Ghostwords 14 September 2007

I agree they shouldn't be merged. Novacon did not begin as a BSFG convention, (and may not remain so in the future). There are also other similar, separate, examples in Wikipedia for instance Eastercon/BSFA, Boskone/NESFA, several LA Worldcons/LASFS, and no apparent demand for those pages to be merged. Don't Merge - I would second VJDocherty's comments. The Birmingham SF Group's primary involvement with Novacon in recent years has been as a financial safety net. Of the six members of the 2007 Novacon committee, only one regularly attends group meetings. Many of those attending the conventions are barely aware of the historical link; many of the Group's members do not attend Novacon. It has not even been held in the Birmingham area since 2001. Don't Merge - The relationship between the Birmingham SF Group and Novacon is similar to that between the BBC and the Proms - the one does not exist solely to organise the other, nor has it always done so. Both exist as separately notable entities - what on Earth can be gained by merging them? -- Dr Walpurgis

merge but the other way round maybe? The point is not whether the 2 are different things but whether a local science fiction society is notable independent of the conference it holds (i.e. I suspect not both of them are notable enough for an article.)Merkinsmum 18:51, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't merge. Both the group and the convention have been in operation since 1971, and have exerted a major effect upon both British sf and sf fandom. With respect, if you were familiar with the latter, the question would not have arisen. Ghostwords (talk) 00:55, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Novacon 9 West?[edit]

A bit of research, accomplished by looking at the Novacon 40 progress report http://www.novacon.org.uk/downloads/n40_pr2_colour.pdf reveals that jan howard finder staged Novacon 9 West in Albany, New York about 1979. It was a delightful con (I was there) and failed to bankrupt Mr. Finder. Perhaps someone with more documentation available would like to add a section about it?
