Picture[edit]

I've done some picture research on File:Northumbrian.jpg (see file page for details). As a result I think we can say a bit more that just The origin of this illustration is unknown and its accuracy questionable. On the one hand the picture appears to be late (1894, though possibly based on something earlier), and late-Victorian twee. But the depiction of Northumbrian itself closely follows a sketch by the engineer James Nasmyth from September 1830 and so is probably pretty accurate. It also corresponds reasonably well with an 1831 engraving by Isaac Shaw [1].

Alternative images we could use could include the original sketch by Nasmyth [2], the engraving by Shaw [3], or an October 1830 profile view from Mechanics Magazine [4]. But if we think the depiction of the engine is reasonably accurate, I'm tempted to keep with the lithograph even if the scene is rather romanticised. Jheald (talk) 23:48, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
