Origin of Name[edit]

The source given for the placename origin is unreliable and inaccurate. The name is likely Anglo-Saxon and derives from OE leah, meaning pastureland, open land, a clearing in woodland. This comes into place names as ly, ley, leigh and lea. The first part of the name is harder to pin down. In the Domesday Book it appears as Wateleia. This might have derived from waeter - meaning water - as the area is next to the Trent and prone to flooding. Thus the name might be something like - water meadow or meadows by the water. OE for wheat is hwaete so the name may mean open wheat fields. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.64.40.254 (talk) 22:14, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Demographical data - delete[edit]

There is far too much data on demographics - population - for a village of this size and it is pretty boring because it hasn't changed much. There's even an entire table been added! This is used to make assertions such as that it welcomes families and is a healthy place to live. It smells to me of developer-speak or at best promotional. I think this section should be deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.64.40.254 (talk) 23:19, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The population of the village varies considerably between the text and the info box. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.64.40.254 (talk) 00:12, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
