Sheffield/South Yorkshire[edit]

Given Sheffield and South Yorkshire have never been included in any official designation of the North Midlands, their inclusion here without any references apart from one seemingly off-hand comment in an official(?) publication seems perverse. Haldraper (talk) 07:43, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Although I am a Sheffielder myself and consider myself as a northerner, I think it is okay to mention it as an informal definition of the North Midlands, because the North Midlands itself is a very loosely defined area of England and while most would probably consider Sheffield to be in Northern England, people in the far north of England would probably consider it more central, so if the informal South Midlands area includes counties in Southern England (e.g. Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire etc.), I have no huge issue with South Yorkshire or Sheffield being mentioned here as long as it isn't being given too much prominence. It might be worth noting that Staffordshire wasn't included in the official designation of the North Midlands but the northern parts of Staffordshire (especially the Stoke area) are still considered part of the informal region. Staffordshire??[edit]

Hi, I just thought I'd ask about this because I think Staffordshire, where I live, (especially the area covered by the Stoke-on-Trent Metropolitan Area or North Staffordshire) should be mentioned in this article because many people probably would consider the northern parts of Staffordshire or the whole county to be in the North Midlands as well as West Midlands, considering it ajoins Cheshire (part of the North West) to the North and there are some services which use "North Midlands" in the area e.g. University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. Also, another reason why I think Staffordshire should be mentioned is because this article only mentions counties/districts in the East Midlands (with some mention of South Yorkshire) and excludes counties in the West Midlands even though the northern parts of it can be considered part of the North Midlands. I don't know about Shropshire (which also ajoins Cheshire) but Staffordshire definitely should be mentioned here. I might add it myself to this article later on if I get time and find reliable references although I would be grateful if anyone else can please give their opinions on the matter here, thank you. Given Staffordshire a mention now (noticed it was previously in the article but got removed when the North Midlands Combined Authority was proposed), if anyone else has any other ideas regarding this matter, please post them here, thank you. Broman178 (talk) 23:24, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
