"Spirit of the Fairlady Z"?[edit]

This at least written in a confusing fashion, even if everything is factually correct. It says it "was Japan's first domestic V6" and that Nissan said this was "to make it in the spirit of the Fairlady Z". The Fairlady was an INLINE six, so how is the new car "in the spirit of it" because it has a new V6? The proximity and order of the sentences suggest it's "in the spirit of" BECAUSE it's a V6. Properly it should say that it was the successor to the Fairlady Z in SPITE of being a V6. I suspect Nissan's original quote was simply refering to them both being six cylinder cars, and they were not referring to what type of engine it is at all. These two details should be isolated by better phrasing. The 300Z used a new V6, Japan's first. Nissan called the car "in the spirit of the Fairlady Z", a previous sporting/GT six cylinder halo car. That simple. Perhaps I will venture to change it myself, at risk of being called unpleasent names.

Z31 Radio / Voice Warning Info Inaccuracy[edit]

The following sentence:

"Since the Voice Warning System utilized the 300ZX's factory radio to play the vocal warnings, the system would no longer function if an aftermarket head unit was installed into the vehicle." near the end of the main Z31 section is inaccurate.

The behavior referenced only results from improperly installed aftermarket radios where the installer cuts and splices the wiring harness in the wrong place. I've owned multiple Z31 300ZX's (and currently still do) that have both an aftermarket radio and a functioning voice warning system. I suggest it be revised or removed, so as not to spread confusion. Here is my suggested revision:

"Since the Voice Warning System utilized the 300ZX's factory radio wiring to play the vocal warnings, the system would no longer function if an aftermarket head unit was installed into the vehicle without the proper care being taken."

Introduction too long and messy[edit]

The introduction of this article has too much information in it and stuff that really should be sorted under other sections. Why are the powers and specs listed in a big mess there rather than under the models further down the page? specifically the Z32 part has all this trivial information but no stats.

Z32[edit]

in 1990, the Z32s front nose panel was made with no nissan emblem. in 1991 they first incorperated the emblem. in 91 the driver airbag was an option. in 92 the driver airbag came standard, with the option of a passenger airbag. in 94 the taller wing was put on the car, and the HICAS was changed from hydrolic to electic. thats as much as i know.

Reply - The Z32 centre nose panel came out with 3 different versions. The Z logo was put on JDM and Asia Pacific exports. The Nissan hamburger logo was on European versions. And the blank panel was for the US market. ZCarJase 05:55, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

-The US 1990 Model year 300zx was the only year to have the "blank" nose panel. All 1991+ Model year US 300zx's had the "hamburger." Additionally the "JDM" emblem was availible with two background colors, red, and grey, from nissan. Though I have only seen the "grey" background on the factory installed emblems.

Production numbers/Commemorative Edition[edit]

While the Twinturbo.net production differences remains a bible of the community it was gathered from incorrect or partially incorrect information that continues to be spread. The Nissan FAST vin database gives correct production numbers. The production numbers from nissan can be seen here: http://www.az-zbum.com/information.production.shtml

Think the Production numbers currently shown need to be updated to the correct figures from the Nissan Vin Database, not what motortrend reported over a decade ago.

Additionally I am not sure of where the appropriate place is to include information on the "commemorative edition 300." Should that information be included in the opening paragraph where it is already mentioned? Or should the details be put further down in the z32 section? Should a picture of the numbered plaque be included in the page for identification? Additionally I think we should include the vin information about the numbered 300, to that end it is as follows: The last 6 Digits of the vin are the "serial" number for the car. An example of this vin number would be: JN1CZ24D7TX960300. The last 6 digits represent the serial number, for the case of the commemorative Zs, the first 2 are "96" indictating that it is the commemorative edition. The last four digits represent which number it is, eg "0001" would represent "1 of 300" and "0300" would represent "300 of 300." At the same time Nissan put this plaque on these few cars Nissan also included a nearly identicle plaque on the factory restored 240Z's, as well as sold a very few "blank" plaques that were not etched with a number or engraved like the plaques on the factory restored 240Zs.

I would appreciate any comments on locating the Commemorative information, discussion on including a picture of the plaque, and verbage describing or identifying the Commemorative editions, as well as if it is appropriate to include such trivial knowledge as to the few other Cases of the bronze plaque out there.Zluster 22:01, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

200ZR, 300ZR additions to Z31...[edit]

The Z31 Chassis also consisted of the 200ZR and 300ZR models only made in Japan. They were both inline 6 versions of the Z31. These should be added, and when I get more time I will try to.--ДрakюлaTalk 15:05, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Z32 Production Differences[edit]

I added production differences as well as corrected some exaggerated technical details in the main Z32 article. Some anonymous user maliciously rolled back the changes with no explanation other than "vandalism" - which is simply untrue. Removed reference to 1995 "gold paint" - there is no anniversary color, nor is it sited in the factory 1995 brochure. Nissan Dealerships often 'create' special edition vehicles in order to move them, but these are not factory modifications.

SMZ[edit]

Dan - As a reference article, this should be a source of information on any special edition models made either by nissan, or in partnership with nissan. I can assure you that my posting of the SMZ specifications had NOTHING to do with being an advertisment for nissan, but was an attempt to clear up incorrect information already on this page and further provide details of what was available. As such, I am restoring my edits.

It has been over a week since I requested that you justify the deletion of this image with support by the guidelines. Under the guidelines images provided by editors of Wikipedia are allowed inclusion in Wikipedia. It is a contravention of the guidelines to assert that such contributions are ineligible. My objective was to produce an image that matched the quality of Image:Nissan-300ZX.jpg. I had the car detailed and photographed at several locations. Thank you. You need to provide a guideline that prevents images provided by editors of Wikipedia from being allowed inclusion in Wikipedia. Many editors provide images to the encyclopedia. Just my 2c from a photographer's point of view: The image shown here is pretty poor compared to the stock image (composition, lighting, angle, distracting background, pole etc.). Unless there is a problem with the stock image (copyright, fair use or other licensing issues) then that image should stay. If it does have problems and this image has to be used, it needs to be Photoshopped to blank the distracting background (I think the car would look good against a plain black "canvas").Zunaid 09:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pop culture/movies/games[edit]

These days every car game includes almost all modern and classic sports cars. The addition of this info thus does not "add value" to the reader's experience of the article, it is more a reflection of the game/movie than of the car itself. The mere fact that a car appeared in such and such a game/movie is not notable in and of itself. WP:TRIVIA gives clear guidance on this and suggests such info be removed. The mere fact that other car articles have them does not mean that this one should too, in fact they should all be removed. Oppose There isn't enough information at the moment to justify separating the Z31 and Z32. I also think separating it would create confusion. I would assume most people don't refer to them by Z31 or Z32. They just refer to them both as 300ZX (and specify the year). So I am against this. Different generations of cars don't require different articles. Oppose What I'd like to see is a stricter following of the Wikiproject convention that follows the home market name, but I think a combined Nissan Fairlady article would be too big. Therefore, I'd suggest

  1. Making Nissan Fairlady a disambiguation page to all the individual Z-car articles (and have Datsun Fairlady redirect to it), and...
  2. ...getting some of the crap out of the Nissan 300ZX article, which at 15.6k isn't long enough to justify splitting even if it was a paragon of writing. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. Looking through the "Z32 production model differences" section there's a lot of really trivial stuff in there which is better suited to an anally retentive enthusiasts' website than an encyclopedia; "Air conditioner evaporator valve changed from aluminum to steel to quiet it"; "keyhole on driver's door and interior light illuminated when driver's door handle is pulled"; "reset' button removed from dash clock"?!? Oppose The page is too short to justify splitting. These are essentially two revisions of the same car. We don't split Mazda MX-5 nor Nissan Skyline GT-R (although paradoxically we do split BMW 3-series into BMW E90, BMW E46 etc.). In this case the article length and level of detail on each model wouldn't be enough to sustain separate articles. Something to consider might be the "Featured Article test" i.e. which stands a better chance of making featured status, this article in one place or one of the two separate articles that would result? FR?[edit]

All 300ZX's were rear wheel drive. Since there is no decent photo of a Z31 (2+2's are butt ugly!), here is one of my 1987 300ZX Turbo.(Z31) In fact, all Z31's and Z32's were rear wheel drive.

I believe there should be a separate Z31 and Z32 category. They are two very different cars. I've never edited a wikipedia page, so I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly. Trust me, my z31 has broken loose, equal parts rain and play, more than enough for me to know that it is rear drive. Here's a few simple tests that you can do to check on my claim, 1. Find a back road and do a burnout (This is dangerous and illegal in most places, so don't cry to me when you lose your only ride.), simple enough, where the smoke is coming from is your driving tires, 2. Crawl under the car and look for the drive shaft, if you see a thick metal cylinder in the middle of the car's under belly, it's rear drive, 3. Ask around on Z car boards. There's no question that the Z31 is a RWD car-just look at the driveshaft, like the previous post shows. Also, the prescence of the ridge between the seats is an extremely strong interior indicator of RWD/AWD vehicles, because it is installed to provide a more straight-through passage of the driveshaft. Now that the Z31/Z32 split debate is concluded, I would like to begin working on improving the citation of references/sources for the article. I recommend we use footnotes and add a section for them in the main article. I have access to a 1991 Nissan Service Manual in print and online and will start verifying the article's information and posting results here. Followup to merge proposal[edit]

Now, with this current (as of 28th Feb) edit which deleted any reference to the 2 liter models, as this is very ridiculous to ignore the 2 liter models, considering I am more interested in the 200ZR ZR-1. This is why I had to do a bit of revert edit, whilst retaining most of the current edits.

A few things to answer, which has now been edited

  1. Japanese people still call the 300ZX as Fairlady Z
  2. The 300ZX did not win Le Mans as that edit made out to be, it was controversially won by a Dauer 962, a converted Porsche racer which was banned afterward.
  3. Class wins: Even Mr Cunningham himself, prefers the overall win at Daytona to Le Mans, as this was the word of his. I spoke to him at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2002 when he was prepping a Lola Can-Am car there

My apologies for the delete of the 2 liter models--I did not understand that they were Z31 variants with a different displacement engine. It was not explained before mentioning them in the article exactly how they are related to Z31s, and if they are, please add to the article stating so.

Could you add the information about the Dauer 962 controversy to the article as well along with a source?

Do you have any written, verifiable evidence about what Mr. Cunningham said to you? Perhaps a website source? If so then could you add that to the article as well?

We need to make sure all information we place in the article has a citation or source we can double-check. Thank you again for clarifying those points.

The bit about the RB20 engine[edit]

Throughout its life...[edit]

Quoting "Throughout its life, the 300ZX has been praised by critics", I need to say that this wasn't the case for the Z31 in the UK as according to numerous people I know from the Z Club, they were unfairly slated by the anti-Japanese car press, largely as the review cars were all NA auto models, also journalists expected that the 300ZX to be in the shadow of the 240Z when demands for GTs were far more greater than the sports car market in the 1980s. 12 Hours of Sebring win[edit]

I was just watching the 12 Hours of Sebring, and they noted that this year is only the third time a car not in the "top" or "premier" category won the race. They listed the other two cars to do so, and the Nissan 300ZX was in the group. However, I don't see mention of that in this article.
