Nihon no Uta Hyakusen → The best 100 Japanese songs – There is no reason to use a transliteration of Japanese title Nihon no Uta Hyakusen (日本の歌百選) because the name itself has no significant meaning in Japanese. It is preferable to use a translated word "The best 100 Japanese songs" for this English Wikipedia. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 09:55, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: I have no problem with that. After all, if a student who doesn't understand Japanese is doing research on Japanese music, are they more likely to type "Nihon no uta..." or "Japanese songs..."? Boneyard90 (talk) 10:47, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the spirit of the nomination but:

This is not an article on the 100 best songs in Japan but an article on a specific list entitled "Nihon no Uta Hyakusen". Therefore, a Wikipedia editor translation is original research since the title is not merely a description of the article but the published name of a specific list. (cf. Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time, 2009, The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time)
Wouldn't a better title be "The 100 Best Japanese Songs", i.e. correct caps for a title and more idiomatic word order? — AjaxSmack 15:09, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comment. WP:UE refers to two methods, "transliteration" and "translation". However if a name is a proper name, it should be transliterated instead of being translated. As "日本の歌百選" seems already to have become a proper name, it should not be translated as you pointed out. Also WorldCat uses a transliterated name "Oyako de utaitsugō Nihon no uta hyakusen : oya kara ko, ko kara mago e" although it includes subtitles.[1] So I withdraw this requested move. I will create The 100 Best Japanese Songs as a redirect to this article. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk)
