Birth year[edit]

Regarding his two (uncertain) birth years, do we know which one is the lunar calendar year, and which one is based on the solar calendar? (many historical figures have uncertain birthdates due to unspecificity of which calendar is used, which is what I am assuming to be the case here.) Are we able to find Chinese or official PLA sources, which may be able to help us figure this out? (for instance, my grandfather has "XX XX XXXX" or "?? ?? ????" on some of his IDs, and a made-up birthdate on his passport, as there is calendaric ambiguity regarding his birthdate. However, the PLA database has his lunar birthdate, since he was a Korean War veteran. This was from a hard copy - I am unaware of any digitalised or online databases of such nature.) -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 06:29, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The PLA source (China Military Online, duplicated in this Ministry of Defense website) indicates "1913". The source for "1914" is China Vitae, which cites Who's Who, Current Chinese Leaders. I do not know on which calendar either source is based, and I have not (yet) found any other source that provides his year of birth, though I am continuing to search for one (my search is, however, limited to online sources in English and a few other languages, of which Chinese sadly is not one). -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:54, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Group photograph[edit]

In response to the question posed through this edit:

To be honest, I don't know which one of the individuals in the photograph is Nie, and I realize that the lack of this information detracts from the usefulness of the image. The source caption is:

A group photo of Nie Fengzhi(L3) and his comrades-in-arms during the Anti-Japanese War.

I do not know, however, what "L3" denotes (third from the left, perhaps?...) -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:58, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nie Fengzhi at Chosin?[edit]

PLA sources specifically stated that Commander Peng Deqing (along with Commissar Zeng Ruqing) commanded 27th Army during the Korean War...where did the info on Nie Fengzhi coming from? Jim101 (talk) 23:18, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Paul Noll source, since almost no notable reliable sources repeated his claim and Dr. Zhang Xiaoming's work directly contradicts this statement. Jim101 (talk) 15:00, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
@Jim101: Thanks for fixing this. In this edit, did you mean "Liu Zhen" instead of "Li Zhen"? Liu Zhen was an air force commander during the Korean War, and the name "Liu Zhen" is mentioned elsewhere in Red Wings Over the Yalu in connection with Nie (e.g., p. 46). However, since we have articles on two Chinese generals named Li Zhen, both of whose careers overlap the Korean War, I cannot be sure. -- Black Falcon (talk) 18:44, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
