Peninsula[edit]

Okay, technically, because of the Niagra River, this is a peninsula. But it would be more accurate a description to call it an isthmus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.80.244.51 (talk • contribs)

Yes, by the logic granted here, any geographical area that happens to have lakes, rivers, streams, creeks or puddles bounding all but one side would be deemed a peninsula. Niagara is NOT a peninsula! This has crept into general usage due to the preference for political maps (i.e., those focusing on a nation, state or province) that have strongly-defined boundaries. Point Pelee and Long Point on Lake Erie are obviously peninsulas, as is Prince Edward County on Lake Ontario. Niagara is not.

These arguments may be true, but the fact remains that the area is still commonly known as the Niagara Peninsula. Wikipedia is not about defining the names of places, but instead about documenting the generally accepted perception of their nature. Just as the Hamilton Mountain is really and escarpment and the Dead Sea is in fact a salt lake, the general public also refers to the Niagara Peninsula as a peninsula. Political maps have probably played a role in this designation, and the area is in fact a "political peninsula", if not a physical one.

The article never states that this is a peninsula in physical fact, and simply uses that word in the general context of the popular referential terminology in regard to the area.

If there are verifiable sources challenging suggestion that there exists, in general opinion, a perception of Niagara as a peninsula, then by all means add this information to the article. Without such evidence, the only possibly justifiable change would be to remove this article from the category "Peninsulas of Ontario" (a claim which is not supported in the article). I do not feel strongly enough about the issue to do this myself, but anyone else may feel free to do so. Miranda1989 (talk) 04:34, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Niagara Peninsula from Category:Peninsulas of Ontario and Category:Landforms of Niagara Region, Ontario. Given that the dab page Niagara Region lists both Regional Municipality of Niagara and Niagara Peninsula, I have added Niagara Peninsula as a main article of Category:Niagara Region, Ontario. I don't know whether it should also be in Category:Geographic regions of Ontario, the inclusion criteria of which are not specified. jnestorius^(talk) 14:59, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Niagara Peninsula[edit]

I am not sure that the definition has anything to with politics. It meets the technical definition of a peninsula, as someone pointed out, even though one side is very narrow (the Niagara River), but, because of the international border it's not a peninsula? By the same logic, then neither is the Ontario Peninsula, which also has an international border (at 2 places-Detroit/Windsor and Niagara Falls) both of which are narrow bodies of water and one of which makes the Niagara Peninsula technically a peninsula but somehow it's not?
