History[edit]

The Hagley Museum and Library near Wilmington, Del., holds the records of the company that built the monument and has some photos taken about 100 years ago, when it was in much better shape.

Move article to "Newkirk Monument"?[edit]

I can't find a source that seems definitive about the formal or original name of the monument. Indeed, references going back through the decades refer to it mostly generically: "the obelisk", "the monument", and the like. But there are several indications that perhaps this article should be named "Newkirk Monument" instead of "Newkirk Viaduct Monument". Among the most relevant are:

Chris Baer, the Hagley historian who compiled the PRR chronology, says the monument is "generally" called the "Newkirk Monument".

As well, its entry at Philadelphia Architects and Buildings is listed under "Newkirk Monument".

But:

On the Philadelphia Architects and Buildings entry, the label under the image says "Newkirk Viaduct Monument".
Wilson (1895) does not name the monument in the text, but a photo of the monument is captioned "MONUMENT NEWKIRK VIADUCT".
