Beach/Surfing area[edit]

The specific beaches and surfing breaks need to be somehow either included or linked to this article - the template Newcastle area or designating it as a 'beach of new south wales' is too general - someone needs to identify the sperate localities - if it is a port as well and a few other things to identify Newcastle with/ or as a 'beach' is insufficient... The Jets[edit]

A user recently updated the year/s part of the following: "The Jets are currently playing in the 2011/12 A-League season, and their tenth in the Australian National Competition." The revision as of 21:05, 31 August 2011, returning "soccer" to its rightful place, also reverted the change (as suggested above) from "eleventh" season to "tenth". I could change it back, but have no proof of its accuracy - so will leave it to someone else. As an aside, perhaps a soccer expert could attempt to encourage 121.217.1.5 to become a more constructive editor and share his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport with the wider readership. Domestic Architecture[edit]

What idiot put these images here? These are possibly the worst examples of Architecture in Newcastle. In particular the image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sympathetic_Development.jpg is apalling. It is absolutely not sympathetic!

Come on people, Newcastle is the Jewel in the Crown of NSW - we should be putting our best foot forward for wikipedia. Incorrect spelling of traditional name[edit]

The aboriginal name for newcastle is listed as "Malubimba", however I've seen it spelled "Muloobinba" - particularly on the Newcastle Council website here: http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/about_newcastle/history_and_heritage/newcastles_history

There is also a mural with the word "Muloobinba" at the main Stockton ferry jetty.

The traditional owners never wrote it down, so there is no "correct" spelling. It might be good to aim for some sort of consistency, but I don't think it's important to push these issues too hard. HiLo48 (talk) 02:39, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need for a new article about Newcastle the individual suburb (the CBD)[edit]

Obviously we know that Newcastle is the centre of the Newcastle metropolitan area. It feels appropriate to have a separate article regarding this, much like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_central_business_district and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney are separate articles.

Whibayganba/Nobbys Head dispute[edit]

I'm at a strong disadvantage here since I have never visited the area, and have no real idea what people would identify with it. However with reference to the dispute over these 3 images [2] [3] [4], I'm leaning towards one of the images of Whibayganba/Nobbys Head. While we are dealing with "metropolitan area is the second most populated area", we are also dealing with 261.8 km2. It seems to me that in case, having an image which shows a more "natural" landmark or part of the natural environment, is useful.

While we do have the skyline image which shows part of the waterfront, the focus is still mostly on the buildings. Likewise at the size of the thumbnail, the boardwalk really just shows artificial structures. I also sort of feel that if you're choosing between 7 images mostly of the built-up environment, ultimately one of them isn't iconic or illustrative enough that you can probably make way for something else. I have no idea if this applies to the cathedral, I do see "Christ Church Cathedral still dominates the skyline of Newcastle" but then again I assume this means that building in the skyline photo behind the tower and trees is probably the cathedral.

As to which image of Whibayganba/Nobbys Head , this is something I find very hard to judge given my lack of local knowledge. On the one hand, the image with a more obvious beaches seems useful given "Newcastle has an abundance of beaches and surf breaks for which the city is internationally well known. Newcastle hosts the annual surfing contest 'Surfest' on the world professional surfing tour" and "Nobbys Beach is a very popular kitesurfing spot, especially during the warm summer months when there are northeasterly sea breezes."

OTOH, if it's correct that more focused image also shows the more iconic perspective, then I think it's a good question whether it's better to show the beach which frankly doesn't seem that illustrative compared to any other beach, while losing the more iconic perspective of Whibayganba/Nobbys Head . I don't think we can choose an image which shows much more of the beach since at while at the thumbnail size of the montage, we can still IMO see Whibayganba/Nobbys Head; if we go much further out it will be hard to really see.

P.S. Feel free to modify the thumbnail images I added to the top as people see fit e.g. move them around, add captions.

Thanks for starting this discussion. I've modified the images slightly, adding captions and two other relevant images. Image 1 is the more iconic view of Nobbys (nobody calls it Whibayganba) that everyone sees. A line-drawing version was even part of the City of Newcastle logo at one stage and it's a view everyone who visits the Newcastle CBD or Stockton sees. It's in the infobox at Nobbys Head for this reason. It's really the most iconic picture that Newcastle has. The reason why the image seems to focus on the buildings is that they are part of Nobbys. They consist of a historic lighthouse and associated buildings, part of which has been converted into a restaurant.
Image 2 is taken from the CBD end of Nobbys Beach. West is to the left and East is to the right. Image 3 was taken from a point to the East of Nobbys. It's a rather obscure view because it really doesn't give a good image of either Nobbys or the beach. That part of the beach, which is actually hidden from general view unless you walk out onto the breakwall, is not at all popular as it's on the ocean side adjacent to the southern breakwall and often receives quite a battering. The spray from waves crashing on the southern side of the southern breakwall can reach the northern breakwall, 500 m (1,640 ft) away. The part of Nobbys beach that receives all of the attention is the end closest to the CBD not the part shown in the image, from where the view in Image 1 is highly visible. Image 4 was taken from the start of the northern breakwall looking south. Image 3 was taken fom the southern breakwall, somewhere behind the ship's bow. The end of the southern breakwall can be seen at the far left, above the sign that says "ATTENTION". That might even be a better image as it shows both Nobbys and highlights the fact that Newcastle is a shipping port.
There is no dispute over the cathedral image. It should be replaced. --AussieLegend (✉) 17:17, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Population in standfirst[edit]

I believe we should include Newcastle's poplation size in the standfirst, - I inserted "With a population of 322,278 in 2016 (the city of Newcastle itself numbering 155,411)" - because without it we have an article that starts by comparing the population size, but without stating it. Thiis is confusing.TobyJ (talk) 04:18, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The lede is written in accordance with general practice and clearly identifies that this article is about the metropolitan area, not the LGA. Adding the LGA population to the first sentence makes it confusing because the metropolitan area does not include all of the LGA, as explained in the demographics section. Newcastle Beach[edit]

There are currently no pictures of Newcastle beach on this page. That seems like an oversight. This one used to be used: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newcastle_Beach.jpg but someone removed it as an effort to clean up low quality photographs.
